Michigan Legislators who Represent Flint are Trying to Change Election Law so that City’s Ballot Will Have Choices

As reported earlier, Flint, Michigan, is having a mayoral election this summer, but currently none of the four candidates’ names will be on the ballot. According to this story, state legislators who represent Flint, including the minority leader in the State Senate, are working to write a bill that would ease the problem. At the very end of the story, the article says the Secretary of State is aware of the effort, and does not plan to take a position on the proposed legislation.

  1. The Michigan Secty of State must be very “wishy-washy.” You’d think the Secty would support the proposed legislation since it would take the office “off the hook”!

  2. Somebody must have informed the SOS office of the late filings. One of the jobs of the SOS is to make sure that election laws are administered uniformly. The SOS had no choice other than to tell Flint to follow the law.

It was somewhat misleading to suggest that the SOS wanted the candidates off the ballot. The proper course of action is to either file a lawsuit that would order the candidates be placed on the ballot, or to change the law. The fact that they are now discussing changing the law perhaps indicates that a lawsuit would not be successful.
