On November 3, Alaska Division of Elections released current registration data. Percentages are: independent and miscellaneous 52.62%; Republican 27.20%; Democratic 14.85%; Alaskan Independence 3.29%; Libertarian 1.43%; Green .32%; Veterans .22%; Constitution .07%.
Percentages in February 2016 were: independent and miscellaneous 54.51%; Republican 26.50%; Democratic 13.73%; Alaskan Independence 3.21%; Libertarian 1.46%; Green .33%; Veterans .22%; Constitution .05%.
Libertarians were the party with the largest decrease, this coupled with Joe Miller running for senate under the libertarian ticket really makes me question just what the heck they are doing up there.
I do not fully agree with you statement. I went to the site and looked at the actual registration numbers. The LP went from 7233 after list maintenance purge on March 3, 2016 to 7557 as of yesterday. That is an increase of 4.48%. The Alaska Independence party went up 6.8%, Dems 11.93%, Reps 6.81%, Greens, 4.08% and Undeclared 2.4%. The only group to go down in total numbers was “non-affiliated” which was down just over 2%. The total number of registered voters went up 4.32%. So the LP went up slightly more than the total and more than the Greens or Undeclared. Still not good given this election environment. BTW my calculations show the LP at 1.427 of the total registered voters as of March not the 1.46 that Richard shows.
Yes, Alaska has data every month, and so any analysis of the effect of the Libertarian Party nominating Joe Miller should compare August 1, 2016 (just before Joe Miller was nominated) to the current figure. Eric is right. Also the figure I show in the post was actually February, not March. I have corrected that.
The AK LP was at 9,787 in Feb. 2010, though. It’s one of only three states that aren’t at record highs for LP voter registration. But, it looks like Alaska hit bottom in April, 2015 and New Mexico has been rising again since 2008.
