On April 27, President Donald Trump tweeted opposition to bailing out Puerto Rico from its financial crisis. See this story. The story does not mention that on June 11, Puerto Rico voters will be asked to choose between independence (or virtual independence), or statehood. The option for the status quo is not on the ballot. It is difficult to predict how Trump’s statements might affect the vote.
I really hope this effect on their referendum, If they THINK they want join statehood even despite Trump say no of fix their economy are darn retarded.
I think this will make people opt for statehood.
@Clay Well for me, They are realistically doomed and shamed for that society.
If Puerto Rico becomes a state, they will be eligible to file for bankruptcy.
I don’t see congress allowing Puerto Rico in as a state in its current financial situation, even leaving aside the political battle over its differing culture.
If they become independent, then they will be on their own dealing with their financial crisis. But, if they become a state, they will not only be dealing with their own crisis now, they will also have to deal with the inevitable financial crisis the federal government is approaching.
Why would congress be willing to adopt a “state ” that is 72 BILLION IN DEBT. no matter how the remaining last “rats on the ship” vote it’s NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN that P.R. becomes the 51st. state . who would be STUPID enough to think that the blatant theft of the previous 72 BILLION would stop future government theft. Is that why it was called the “welfare state” for so many years? gravy train is over get off that island while you can real estate taxes are going to SKYROCKET….SAD VERY SAD
