On May 10, New Hampshire Representative Joseph Stallcop held a press conference to say he is switching party registration from Democratic to Libertarian. He represents the Cheshire County 4th district, and had been elected without opposition as a Democrat in 2016. He is 21 years old.
Because the Libertarian Party now has two state representatives, it is entitled to be recognized as a caucus, with its own room in the capitol. Stallcop has become a dues-paying member of both the national and state Libertarian Parties. Thanks to Independent Political Report and Darryl Perry for this news.
This is refreshing news. For once a Democrat has switched. I understand he was a Bernie Sanders supporter so I can’t believe he is in total agreement with the LP economic positions.
Or maybe he didn’t agree with Sanders economically, but agreed with his civil libertarian positions and saw Sanders as the best possible chance of getting elected. And then counteracted Sanders’ economic positions by voting for a capitalist congressman.
He is from Keene, which is a very liberal Bernie Sanders type town. Likely was a supporter, but open minded enough to consider the LP. He said he is a classic liberal, and there are quite a few libertarians who run as Democrats here out of convenience. NH is a very easy state to get elected in if you do the work.
As a former Democrat, I can attest that the Libertarian principles of Ending Wars (Military and Drug), pro-choice and open borders, are more to my liking than what the Democrats offer.
Yes, I am a Tree hugger and very pro EPA, and am pro Union, but the Dems are horrible on these issues.
We should reach out to Democrats more.
