Bonnie Kristian, contributing editor to The Week, writes here that she believes Justin Amash could be re-elected to the U.S. House in 2020 as an independent. Her column does not mention the straight-ticket device, nor the fact that no independent has ever been elected to congress from Michigan, nor to either house of the Michigan legislature. However, that is partly because the Michigan election law did not allow for independent candidates until 1976.

Maybe he could win a 3 way (or more) race for re-election as an independent candidate but I doubt it.
How about him running for re-election to the US House as a Libertarian?

more spies needed behind those oligarch closed doors.
Ms. Kristian’s article is one of the most ignorant I’ve ever read about how the US election system works. The only wisdom she imparts is this sentence about independents and third parties: “Electoral failure is a foregone conclusion because of how our voting system is structured.” Yup. But the rest of her article blindly ignores that reality. Nothing will change if we liberty-lovers don’t have the political power to effect change. Actions like Amash’s voluntarily giving up political power because of his “principles” is a recipe for no change, ever. With friends like Amash, who needs enemies?
FWIW, IMO Amash is just another money-grubbing trough feeder. Principled? Not so much. Here’s another short and sweet article about him: https://www.pacificpundit.com/2019/05/19/amash-is-a-co-owner-of-dynamic-source-international-a-chinese-company/

Another viewpoint on Rep. Amash and the China/tariff question.
