  1. While I have serious reservations about nominating a former GOP office holder for the fourth presidential election in a row, at least he had the courage to leave the Republicans first and chart a totally uncertain independent path. If he is serious about the Libertarian nomination he should switch his affiliation from independent to Libertarian now. The longer he plays the run for re-election as an independent or seek the Libertarian presidential nomination game the more he risks falling short on both. At this point if I were a delegate I would NOT vote for him.

  2. How soon would he NOT be a candidate due to Trump command orders in the now USA LAWLESS banana republic ???

Will the Donkeys have a ZILLION guards for JA against any such TCO ???

Note the recent Trump pardon comments about illegal southern border wall builders.

  3. As a Libertarian, I don’t have a problem with the party nominating candidates from other parties if they are libertarian enough. I always say that the party is a means to an end (more freedom) and not an end it itself. It’s not important to me that the party win or that its nominees are recognized members. What’s important is the advancement of liberty. In fact, I think that the party should encourage fusion candidates wherever allowed. It would be great, IMO, if Amash declared himself a fusion candidate and run simultaneously in the Democratic, Republican and Libertarian primaries and caucuses wherever this is legally allowed.

  4. Walter- I will grant you that Justin Amash is FAR more libertarian that either Bob Barr (who really was NOT a libertarian at all) or Gary Johnson (who was very libertarian on some issues but not at all on others) but the Libertarian Party has got to protect itself from being considered just a minor league affiliate of the GOP. If Rep. Amash wants the nomination he will have to earn it Nick Sarwarks’ comments notwithstanding.

  5. I hope not. Although I would welcome Justin Amash if he joins the Libertarian party I would not support him or any former Democrat or Republican who has recently joined the LP to be the Presidential nominee.

If Amash joins the Libertarian party he should run to keep his seat in Congress or for the Senate. I think that only a person who has worked inside the Libertarian party for at least a few years should be the standard bearer of the Libertarian party.

  10. Michigan does not have registration by party, so it is impossible for Amash to become a registered Libertarian. But he is free to become a dues-paying member.

  11. Let the selling out of the LP continue! Who will pack the convention more: Amash or Chafee? Will Kasich be next?

  12. My hope for a presidential nominee is someone who can spread the Libertarian message to the most people possible. That requires not only a firm grounding in Libertarian principles, but also the ability to convey that message clearly, as well as the ability to get in front of the maximum number of people. To date we have not had a presidential nominee who has fit all three of those criteria completely. But that doesn’t mean we can only focus on one of them to the detriment of the others. For me, Gary Johnson in 2012 was the best we’ve had, with Barr in 2008 being the worst.

  13. If Gary Johnson is the best person the LP ever had, then that explains why the party can’t go anywhere. Harry Browne was much more of a real libertarian. Johnson is a fake.

  14. Walter Ziobro, the Libertarian Party now has ballot status in New York. In certain circumstances, in certain races, I could actually see certain kinds of candidates running on the conservative and Libertarian lines.

  15. Harry Browne was great on the first criteria I mentioned, ok on the second, and dismal on the third (almost zero media coverage). This demonstrates exactly what I was talking about. Focusing on only one aspect while ignoring the others. You can run a complete AnCap, and if they get no coverage or can’t talk to average voters then all it is is a masturbatory session for party hard-liners.

  16. Brandon wrote “…the ability to convey that message clearly, as well as the ability to get in front of the maximum number of people.”

LP diehards cling to the belief that the only thing stopping the ascendence of the LP is the lack of voters’ knowledge about LP principles. Nothing could be further from the truth. The vast majority of actual voters (people who generally vote) know plenty about such LP principles as open borders, legalization of all drugs and abolition of taxation. These are real, easily understood foundational positions of the LP. The vast majority of voters quickly reject the possibility of voting for anyone with the (L) after their name on the ballot because of what it implies.

The bottom line is the LP will continue to nominate pretend candidates who pretend to actually matter. They don’t.

  17. “voters … know plenty about such LP principles as open borders, legalization of all drugs and abolition of taxation” these are the types of extremes that people unfamiliar with the party spread, without the knowledge or mention of incrementalism and the fact that the majority of people in the LP are not full anarchists. For a person that actually knows and expresses what the party is about listen to Larry Sharpe: https://www.facebook.com/sharpeway/ & https://www.facebook.com/Sharpe4Gov/

  18. LP is doomed to near zero votes for POWER offices [USA Congress – State legislatures] with utopian NO govt anarchists in control of the LP.

How many years of anarchist control of the LP so far ???

  19. Reason mag, Oct 2019, p.12 has a one page story about Amash-

with possible Prez machinations in the LP.

  20. About 24 hours ago I posted a comment on this thread right after Demo Rep’s comment about a Reason mag article. Where is my post?

  21. As Richard Winger pointed out Justin Amash cannot register in Michigan as a Libertarian, but the longer JA teases about seeking the LP presidential nomination without becoming a dues paid member of both the Michigan and National LP, more he undercuts the credibility of his integrity.

I encourage Amash to join the state and national LP and seek election to Congress. If elected he could build a powerful record of his actions for a full term in the House that could almost guarantee his nomination in 2024. If consistent enough that could win my meager endorsement in 2024. For 2020? No sale.

  22. D Frank Robinson- would you have him seek re-election as a Libertarian or as an independent?
