New Mexico Representative Javier Martinez (D-Albuquerque) has introduced HB 350. It would move the presidential primary from June to the second Tuesday in January. If passed, obviously it would not have any practical impact until 2024. The bill leaves the primary for non-presidential office in June.
At the district court hearing about the Texas filing fee for convention-nominating parties, the judge asked when the general election ballot needed to be prepared. The state lawyer didn’t seem to know. The Libertarian lawyer explained “August”. The judge asked August 2019 or August 2020. “August 2020”.
The judge replied, “got it”.

What is with this nation’s obsession with making election cycles longer and longer? There was an Oklahoma bill introduced last year to move all campaign registration to January (later amended to move it to December) before the election. It just doesn’t seem healthy at all to do this.

There are contribution limits for Congress of $2500 for the primary and $2500 for the general. Spread the two apart, and you can get $5000. Also it provides more full-time campaign consultants. Imagine if you could only work two months every two years. And it may also cut out challengers.

This would of course be after South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire & Iowa. Based on my calculations there would be THREE primaries/caucuses in Dec 2023!

They could save money on a primary, and improve voter turnout if they scheduled the Presidential primary on the same day as the prior Congressional election.
