At Least One Arkansas County Has Presidential Candidates Listed on Two Pages

Arkansas and New Jersey are the two states in which each county designs its own ballot, and determines for itself the order of candidates on the ballot. This Washington County, Arkansas sample ballot has six of the presidential candidates on the first page, and the other seven on the next page. Generally, experts in ballot design are very critical of that design.

The ballot instructions say, “Presidential Candidates Are on 2 Pages. You must select “more” to view all candidates.

  1. Arkansas draws lots for each candidate in each county. In Pulaski County (Little Rock), Trump is number one.

    It looks like the ballot is for use with a voting machine.

    What happens if you vote for someone on the first page, will it advance to the next race?

    In the 2016 Republican presidential primary in certain counties with a particular voting machine, the second page had the last candidate and Uncommitted. If the last candidate were a no-name, they would get a few percentage in that county. Voters were getting to the second page and choosing between Rick Santorum, or Carly Fiorina or Uncommitted and choosing the only candidate visible. This had the effect of erasing any choice made on the first page.
