Chicago Tribune Editorial Writer Publishes Op-Ed on Why U.S. House Should be Expanded — 34 Comments

  1. I haven’t really thought about the house but I wish we could expand the Supreme Court right now. I’m thinking to somewhere around 17 to 71 seats. With Biden and Harris appointments for most of the seats we could finally pass overdue changes like taking all of your guns. Another one that comes to mind is passing a one child policy like China and making abortion mandatory for anyone who already has a child. I’d love to see corporations and the police outlawed, the border wall torn down and ICE abolished, the entire population of Mexico and Central America move to the US, race mixing made mandatory, right wing fake news taken off the air, and all the wealth redistributed among other things. We could do a lot if only we controlled the Supreme Court. Maybe even merge with the DPRK and make Kim our leader.

  2. The number of Representatives in the House should be increased, but the number of Supreme Court Justices should stay the same. The Supreme Court has no direct relation to population while the House of Representatives certainly does.

  3. Steve Chapman identifies as a small-l libertarian. What he is, is someone of insightfulness compared to the average op-ed columnist on a major newspaper’s pages. (I’ve read him for years and follow him on Twitter.)

  4. SCOTUS hacks — perversions of 1-8-1 general welfare and 1-8-3 interstate commerce clauses

= DEAD States = now pass thru agents of *Fed AID*.

More or Less STATIST control freak laws.

3 members quite enough with PR — total votes/total members

    higher members = more factions.

  5. Sorry, Robert, but political reasons aside, SCOTUS should be larger. It should have

    EXACTLY THIRTEEN MEMBERS.

Yes, Justices don’t exactly “circuit ride” like a century and more ago, but … nonetheless.

The Chief is Chief Justice of the US, not of the Supreme Court. So, no appeals court for him.

There’s 11 enumerated circuit courts plus the DC circuit. That means TWELVE ASSOCIATE JUSTICES.

    Plus the Chief for 13.

  6. NUMBER OF USA CIRCUITS 100 PCT ARBITRARY.

    7+1+1 = 9
    —–
NONPARTISAN ELECTION OF ALL JUDGES VIA APPV – PENDING CONDORCET.

  7. The number of circuits should be expanded too, so we can stack them with leftist judges. Another reason the court should be expanded is that they have more cases appealed to them nowadays.

  8. Super-easy to be a RED communist — with the income and assets of OTHER folks.

Shows up in the RED communist murders / lootings of millions since 1917.

2021 New Age RED Donkey communists = more of same – esp in Deficit City.

USA about to have a repeat or worse of 1931 – with RED communist Biden added taxes/deficits.

  9. It’s the capitalist scum who live off the labor of the workers. Communists are just taking back what’s ours. The millions killed is capitalist propaganda. Biden is not even close to a communist, but at least a little better than the fascist Republicans.

  10. He refers to the concept of the Wyoming Rule, which is encouraging.

Does anyone know if there is a specific bill in Congress to adopt the Wyoming Rule, and who sponsored it?

  11. Taran, RE the fivethirtyeight article, Any person who uses the phrase “our democracy” has absolutely zero credibility. We are a republic, not capital “R,” and anyone who can’t handle the truth about that should go back and review their high school civics. Or, better yet, just ignore the government indoctrination centers which fomented their ignorance and instead read old books such as the Federalist Letters, particularly Madison’s Federalist X.

  12. A South American military junta is a Republic. Nazi Germany and fascist Italy were Republics. It’s you who has zero credibility when you use the views of long dead slaveowners to justify a republic which is not a democratic one. I would prefer a people’s democracy but at the very least we need a democratic republic. Now go read the rest of the article to see why you are trying to justify a fascist apartheid junta.

  13. Savings = Investment — by definition — in ALL regimes.

Return on Investments = interest / *profits* / replacement costs – aka depreciation

    — all connected to interest rates in sane regimes.

Worse and worse capital replacement costs due to nonstop inflation since 1933.

Easy to be a MORON econ communist — see econ collapse of olde Russia/USSR regime in 1917-1991 esp 1970-1991.

  14. @Jeff Becker… Firstly, a Republic is a Representative DEMOCRACY. They’re 100% the samething. And democracy is a term to refer to any form of government in which the people control the government (either directly or through representatives). It simply means not a monarchy; “Demo” comes from the Greek word “Demos” which means “the people” or “the commoners”, modern democracy/republics originated with the ancient Greeks. The suffix “cracy” is greek for “power” or “rule”; so “Democracy” literally translates as “Power of the People”. Secondly, many of the federalist were closet monarchists; particularly Hamilton. This country is the way it is because of the ANTI-Federalists…. namely Jefferson. We wouldn’t have had the “Bill of Rights” without them. Neither modern “major” party embodies either of these two ideologies anymore. The historical federalist ideology is now the Constitution Party and the historical Anti-Federalist ideology is now the Libertarian Party.

The only reason you have a stick up your ass about this, is because you hate using the term “Democracy” because you’re a partisan asshole who refuses to ever admit the Democrats have a decent idea. The fascinating thing (as has been noted by both Tulsi Gabbard and Justin Amash) is that bills will be introduced by say Democrats, to be shot down by Republicans, only to be re-introduced (word for word) the next congressional session by Republicans to only be shot down by Democrats. So you’re literally supporting a party that steals bills from the Democrats, after literally voting down the very same bill the prior congressional session.

I know that Taran is likely a troll…. the posts read to much like someone from the complete opposite side of the political spectrum engaging in reductio ad absurdum of their “opponents” political views. However, I too personally favor expanding SCOTUS (and the house). Specifically to 17 judges, but only 9 would every sit in a single case. Also favor the creation of a Constitutional court that consists of 2 or 3 judges from each state(based on population of each state), each elected in non-partisan elections by the people there of. The Constitutional court would only hear appeals regarding constitutionality of laws from the Supreme Court. If the Constitutional court disagrees with a Supreme court ruling, it would effectively “veto” the judgement and send the case back to the Supreme court for a re-trial which would require a 2/3rds majority of justices to uphold their own ruling.

  15. LAW MAKING–

    DEMOCRACY — MAJORITY RULE

OLIGARCHY – MINORITY RULE – 2 OR MORE, LESS THAN A MAJORITY

MONARCHY – MINORITY RULE ONE — AKA TYRANT — STALIN / HITLER / MAO TYPES

    DIRECT / INDIRECT VERSIONS.
    ———
USA CONST 4-4 RFG = INDIRECT DEMOCRACY STATES

RI – DORR’S WAR IN LITTLE R IN EARLY 1840S

OLDE RI CHARTER KEPT AFTER 1776 –
VERY RESTRICTED VOTERS AND SEVERE GERRYMANDER
1844 RI CONST – MORE VOTERS / LESS GERRYMANDER
SCOTUS HACKS — 1849 LUTHER V BORDEN — NOOO MENTION OF UNDERLYING ROT IN RI.

PART OF HOLDING UNION TOGETHER WITH TWINE AND GLUE – 1789-1861

  16. One of the down-sides of the Wyoming Rule is that, as Wyoming is slowly growing relative to the other states, it is theoretically possible that the overall number of seats might be reduced in some future census under the rule. For this reason, it might be recommended to add to the bill a provision that the overall number of seats not be reduced as a result of any future census.

  17. Is Aiden Andy? I am not a troll and the views I post are 100 percent my own. I’m not from the other side or a reductio ad absurdum. But yes 17 is a good number.

  18. A republic is not necessarily a democracy. See examples of non-democratic republics above. There are also democratic monarchies like the UK where the monarchs are ceremonial, but because they exist at all they are not republics.

  19. My approach to political positions is that I started out as a liberal in a conservative area and family, then became a progressive then a socialist and now communist. The right wingers talked me into it. They kept saying I was socialist and communist way before I was so eventually I read communist materials and discussed them with communists and became only myself. I believe we should do everything possible to piss off and upset right wing fools and make them crap their overalls. Just be everything they accuse us of and make all their worst fears come true.

  20. By all means expand the Supreme Court to 17. The House can be expanded to several thousand with the members from each state meeting on their state capitol and conference calling the states together.

  21. The ideal population for a house district should be about 30,000 to 50,000. That would be unwieldy for an in person or zoom congress, but if they meet in the state capitols and zoom from there it would work. Even if a few of the biggest states may have to have two or three meeting places, it could still work.

  22. Before anyone freaks out about their salaries it doesn’t have to be a full time job. Make it $100 a year plus travel reimbursement like New Hampshire, and have them in session for maybe 2 or 3 months a year.

  23. Legis bodies meeting — any time, any place, in person, by written proxy or electronically.

  24. Yes, please expand the House but even more so the Supreme Court and circuit courts.

  25. Why? Because you want to fill those positions with more leftists, in order to fulfill the goals of the revolutionary communist agenda?

  26. Yes, I want to fill those positions with what you would consider leftists, to help get government policies more in line with what most people in this country want. If you think that is revolutionary communism, you need to set down your crack pipe, get back on your prescribed mental health meds, and get some surgery done to remove the homemade weld job you did attaching your aluminum foil hat directly to your brain.

  27. How many DEAD/enslaved by commie regimes since 1917 ???

esp during Lenin, Stalin, Mao killer/tyrant regimes ???

  28. Once again:

If you think that mainstream Democrats are communist, you need to set down your crack pipe, get back on your prescribed mental health meds, and get some surgery done to remove the homemade weld job you did attaching your aluminum foil hat directly to your brain.
