On June 28, California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State, seeking to have his party membership listed on the upcoming recall ballot. In 2019 the recall law was changed to provide that a person being recalled may have his or her party listed on the recall ballot, if the office is a partisan office. However that law, SB 151, said the person being recalled had to inform the Secretary of State about whether he or she wants the party on the ballot or not very early in the process.
Governor Newsom failed to file the form saying he wants to be identified as a Democrat. His lawsuit argues that the deadline for doing that is unreasonably early. See this story.
I’m sure he’ll win his case. It’s not like election law often applies to the Democrats and Republicans, it’s usually wielded against minor parties in an attempt to keep us off the ballot and weak.
ANY POLL of the mere voters ???
What percent of such voters do NOT know the Guv is an arrogant powermad Donkey hack ???
I’m not so sure he will win the lawsuit.
So, he tripped up over one of his own early filing deadlines?
Poor guy.
CA RED commie Donkey gerrymander hacks have POWER to ex post facto change date deadline ???
Will other candidates be able to have their party preference next to their names?
The ballot has two parts. The first part is the only part that will mention Gavin Newsom, and that is the part of the ballot that the lawsuit deals with. No other person will be mentioned in that part of the ballot.
The second half lists all the candidates who would like to be Governor if the recall vote (in the top half of the ballot) succeeds. Newsom’s name is not there. The other candidates will have their party labels if they are members of a qualified party, but the candidates who are registered in an unqualified party will not. They will have “party preference: none.”
It will be dishonest if it fails to identify him as a Communist.
