As reported here earlier, on September 2 Jason Gonzales asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear Gonzales v Madigan, 21-352. This is the case in which Gonzales charged that his Democratic primary opponent, Illinois speaker Michael Madigan, in 2016 had recruited two candidates with Hispanic surnames to enter the primary for State House in their contest, so as to split the Hispanic vote. These were two individuals who had no interest in running for the state legislature, and merely filed to assist Madigan. Although this situation may seem an odd reason for a lawsuit, there had been a Seventh Circuit precedent in 1974 that said recruiting “sham” candidates violates the U.S. Constitution. Illinois is in the Seventh Circuit. Nevertheless, Gonzales lost his case in the lower federal courts.
Madigan wasted no time in telling the U.S. Supreme Court that he would not bother to file a response to the Gonzales cert petition; he said so on September 7. Of course, if the U.S. Supreme Court wants a response from Madigan, they can ask for it, and in that case of course Madigan would respond.

This guy ought to be embarrassed to advance the argument that Hispanic voters will automatically vote for people with Hispanic names, without knowing anything else about the candidate. It’s a bit racist. But, even if they do that – so what? He’s allowed to benefit from that and not anyone else on the ballot?
Why are Hispanics even allowed to vote in this country at all, is the real question. I don’t really care how many generations they’ve been here. If they want to vote, they need to move to a Hispanic country, period.

The only way for competition in elections is to prohibit all forms of plurality voting and click the like is one of those.
When I like something I use a “1” as a comment and not a Facebook like.
Click the like, one vote for one choice = one-party voting system
Click the like one vote between two choices = one-party voting system
Click the like, one vote between three choices = two-party voting system
Click the like, one vote between three or more choices with two or more winners = three-party voting system*

You should try using the unifying math of pure proportional representation if you want to help the Environmentalist Party become part of government.

I don’t think sham candidates are unconstitutional; but, they are in poor taste. It undermines fairness in a political contest. It’s a dirty tactic; but, not an unconstitutional tactic.

While he may not be a “sham” candidate, chances are good that no one will get 50% of the vote in the next election for President there.
Spoiler and sham candidates are the weakness of plurality voting. Attempts to correct this with band-aid fixes, like top-two primaries, only leave a large portion of the electorate feeling disenfranchised.
Ranked choice or approval voting are better solutions.
