This is the season for activists to ask legislators for ballot access improvement bills. There are many states that badly need improvements in these laws.

First Amendment freedom of the press includes the right to publish your choices to fill elective offices on a ballot without censorship. All ballot access censorship must be abolished to end duopoly censorship of voter choices. How? The all write-in ballot like the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot for both domestic and foreign resident voters.
I hope this passes. The new ballot access law for minor party and independent candidates in NY is unreasonably difficult.

I would be surprised if they actually didn’t find more in NY, because regardless of whether they supported the increased restrictions, they were essentially forced to vote for it because former governor Cuomo slipped his attack on free and fair elections in must-pass covid legislation. The question would be whether they really did get the bill to reverse that increase onto the floor for a vote, and whether that vote will pass. I think it’s possible.
Here in Illinois, it doesn’t seem as likely that the legislature would pass (or even vote on) any such ballot access requirement reduction, at least not before Ranked Choice passes and eliminates the “spoiler” excuse the state Democrats like to use to justify their undemocratic treatment of third parties.

Any day now we may get a decision stroking down the Illinois 5% petition in U.S. House races. If so, that would require the Illinois legislature to pass a helpful bill, and maybe that bill would contain other good things.

That 5% petition for US House in Illinois has long been an albatross. What guarantee is there that the Illinois legislature will pass a significantly more reasonable bill?
I several years ago in Tennessee that a law suit threw out their ballot access law for minor parties, and the Tennessee legislature was SUPPOSED to pass a more reasonable bill, but the bill they passed, which became law, only made very minor improvements over the previous law, and it is still very difficult for a minor party to gain party status in Tennessee, so difficult that nobody has been able to do it since the so called “improvements” were passed.

Both of the major political parties have attacked ballot access over they years, for both minor parties and independent candidates, and also for ballot initiatives, referendums, and recalls. I have noticed that when the Democrats are in power, they attack ballot access, and when the Republicans are in power, they attack ballot access.
If Libertardians were ever in power they would attack ballot access as well.
The general direction of ballot access was more toward improvement for several decades. Now it’s changed in the other direction. As for libertardians, it will never happen, so it’s a moot point.
