Alabama Democratic Party Doesn’t Nominate Anyone for Seven Statewide Offices

Here is the list of Democrats who filed for federal and state office in the Alabama primary of May 24. No Democrat filed for seven statewide offices: Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, Auditor, Agriculture Commissioner, Public Service Commission place one, Public Service Commission place two, and Justice of the Supreme Court, place six.

Alabama doesn’t permit write-in votes in party primaries, so there is no method for Democrats to nominate anyone for those six offices.

For State Senate, Democrats are running someone in fourteen of the thirty-five seats. For State House, Democrats have someone in 47 of the 105 seats.

  1. In Indiana, I don’t believe a Democrat filed for State Treasurer or State Auditor.

  2. There’s no such thing as proportional representation in singular executive elections.

  3. Well, this is good news for the Libertarians. Now the LP of AL has a good chance to retain ballot access, assuming they successfully achieve it, which is looking likely now.

  4. Alabama requires a higher percentage of the vote for statewide minor party candidates than any other states — 3% of the last gubernatorial vote. The vote test is 20% for any statewide office.

No statewide minor party or non-presidential independent petition in Alabama has succeeded since 2000, except the Americans Elect 2011 petition succeeded, but then it went to waste because Americans Elect didn’t run anyone.

Independent presidential candidates don’t need a 3% petition; that petition is 5,000 signatures.

  5. A lot of these offices require specific skill sets. That answers my initial thought about why some of the candidates running for US Senate in the Democratic primary couldn’t be persuaded to switch over.

  6. They have no chance of winning, so they couldn’t even find any warm bodies to put up for office.

  7. What State has the lowest politics IQ —

esp due to really rotted publik skoools ???

many southern States- what brains there were —

    killed off in 1861-1866.
