The only qualified parties on the ballot in North Dakota this year are the Republican and Democratic Parties. This is the first year since 2006 for which that has been true. For 2008-2020, the Libertarian Party was also on the ballot.
The petition is 7,000 signatures, and the North Dakota Libertarian Party didn’t submit a petition this year because party leaders said they had no candidates willing to run for office this year.
In 2006, although the Libertarian Party wasn’t on the ballot in North Dakota, it placed an independent candidate on the ballot for U.S. Senate. The non-presidential independent petition is much easier, and requires 1,000 signatures due in early September. An independent candidate could still qualify in North Dakota this year.

The national party can recruit candidates and help affiliates. What have they been doing besides wasting money and trying to overthrow elected state boards?
Nothing. They should probably be dissolved. The state parties don’t really need them for anything whatsoever. There is no point in running for president to get 1%. LP should run for low level local offices it can win. State parties which are not well organized enough to get on the ballot should work on getting better organised instead of begging other states for ballot access welfare. The national party does not need an office or employees or anything else. There shouldn’t even be a national party. Just state parties and local winnable races.

The LP could have EASILY qualified for the ballot this year in North Dakota. I know the real story of what went wrong, and it was caused by, a) an inexperienced state committee who seriously underestimated the difficulty of the job, and had bad ideas for how to go about completing the petition drive, b) the LNC National Ballot Access coordinator going along with their goofy plan, even though the LNC had ALREADY voted to allocated a good percentage of the money for the drive, and even though the LNC was holding that money, and was under ZERO obligation to go along with their rookie plans that anyone with any experience in ballot access could have predicted would FAIL, which is EXACTLY what I said would happen at the time, and c) an LNC that did NOTHING to intervene, even though I had alerted some of them, the LNC, and its Ballot Access Committee, and its National Ballot Access Coordinator, sat there like a bunch of LEMMINGS, most of them complete unaware of the TRAIN WRECK that was taking place, and did NOTHING to stop it.
If the Libertarian Party was a more serious organization, people would get FIRED/REMOVED FROM THEIR POSITIONS over stuff like this.
If they have no candidates that can win anything there is no point in doing a petition. It’s just a waste of time and or money.
Minor parties and independents do not just run to win, because their chances of that are generally slim. They run to get a message out and build a movement.
The line about them not have candidates is an EXCUSE. They gave up months ago, like around 6 months before now. They had MONTHS to recruit candidates. The REAL store is getting the petition signatures was harder than they realized, and their rookie ideas were not working, which is why the LNC’s National Ballot Access Coordinator, the LNC’s Ballot Access Committee, and the LNC itself, SHOULD HAVE stepped in and pointed them in the right direction. They had MONTHS to recruit candidates, and yes, there are plenty of libertarians in North Dakota who could have been asked to run. Funny how they had candidates in a bunch of previous elections.
President is the office of which the highest percentage of the public follows. This is the office where minor party candidates can reach the most people. I think of the presidential campaign as an advertising and recruitment campaign for the Libertarian Party and movement.

Minor patties should just run to win local office which they can and do win. Want to get ideas out? Try starting a book club. Social media accounts. Create your own book’s, movies, music, etc. Pass out pamphlets. Start issue lobbying groups. Organize events like protests and festivals. Develop public speakers. Start a caucus within the GOP. THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO GET THE MESSAGE OUT OTHER THAN PLAYING PRETEND POLITICAL PARTY AND SPOILING ELECTIONS YOU CAN’T WIN.
Politics is a serious thing. You don’t get the message out by getting your 1% while handing a major election to the communist enemies of humanity. Most of the public does not pay attention to low level offices. If minor parties want to reach a lot of people with their message, they MUST run for at least some high level offices.

In a strong conservative state like North Dakota what people want to see on the ballot are strong Trump Republicans. They are a tiny social club with the national budget of a single McDonald’s location. Most state parties are too small to afford a rental cubicle or a single employee. The average monthly supper club might fill the back of a Danny’s or one of the smaller rooms at the public library in the biggest cities, or a single table at a restaurant most other places.
The only time they make any real world difference is when they peel away enough conservative votes to elect some braying communist jackass. Otherwise they are a totally do nothing useless bunch. Dissolving the LNC and nominating NOTA for president would be good first steps.
