Georgia Will Appeal Redistricting Decision but Won’t Seek a Stay

On November 1, Georgia state officials said that they will appeal the U.S. District Court decision that struck down the state’s U.S. House and legislative district boundaries. But it won’t seek a stay, which means that the legislature will soon proceed to draw new maps that will probably be used in 2024. See this story.

  25. AZ distorts the history of the first World War. A Serbian nationalist assassinated the heir to the Austrian throne, which is what led to the Austrian invasion of Serbia, not Kaiser Wilhelm. Germany was pulled into the war due to alliances, and was not an instigator. The Serbian nationalists were motivated by a desire to create what eventually became Yugoslavia, including many areas then under Austrian rule.

    As for why the sides lined up the way they did, the central powers mostly controlled compact territory contiguous or adjacent to their homelands, whereas the allies had far flung colonies all over Africa, Asia, the America’s, etc., and Russian territory had long expanded deeply into Asia, in addition to its border conflicts with the central powers and thus alliance of convenience with their opponents on their other flank.

    It’s entirely untrue that one side was more democratic, even if that was a good thing, much less worth foregoing the US tradition of neutrality in European wars. Germany and Austria were limited monarchies just like the UK. Russia was an autocracy. The British, French and other allied colonial empires were certainly not democratic, as democracy did not extend to the colonised.

    The US entry into the war was based on lies, and caused a great deal of misery as it destabilized and derailed the peace of Brest-Litovsk and turned it into a tour of the Central Powers, at much additional human cost, and leading to the rise of Bolsheviks and Nazis, second world war, etc. Had the United States stayed out, the world would have been vastly better off in all the years since.

    I don’t see any more reason to blame the central powers than the allies for WW1 or to consider one more democratic than the other, or for the US to have intervened. The US intervention was the single worst thing about that war.

  36. According to AZ’s source the proposed alliance with Mexico was contingent on US entry into the war. It stands to reason that Germany would seek additional allies on its side if a previously neutral nation joined the other side.

    That leaves dead Americans killed by German subs. Assuming that happened, whose ships were they on and why?

  38. AZ should read his sources. The Lusitania was likely carrying munitions for the Entente war effort. In general, the ships sunk by the Germans were supplying the British.

    As for killers/enslavers, the British, French and other Entente allies were killing and enslaving a lot more people in their colonies than the Germans were in the lead up to the war, and the Russian Empire was the biggest autocracy or dictatorship on either side.

    AZ seems to relish unnecessary wars. Has he ever fought in a war? Been in a war zone in wartime? Lost close family members to war? Spent much time with people who had fought on the front lines?

    Pat makes a good point regarding killers/enslavers. In global terms, the entente were significantly worse killers/enslavers than the central powers.
