North Dakota News Story on Libertarian Petition Drive — 12 Comments

  1. The real lesson for this story is the sad point that the North Dakota Libertarian Party has never asked the legislature to reduce the vote test for ongoing status. The law requires 5% for one of several statewide offices. The median vote test across the USA is 2%. North Dakota Libertarians ought to ask a state legislator to introduce a bill to lower the 5% to something lower. The party has done this petition numerous times. It is expensive, and it is also somewhat burdensome for the Secretary of state to check the signatures. It would be in everyone’s interest to have a lower vote test. Lobbying for easier rules to stay on the ballot has succeeded in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, DC, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. There is no rational reason not to do this work.

  2. The retarded troll has obviously never been to North Dakota. 80 degrees in September you fucktard.

  3. ARA/Aryan Republican Army: Yes, but not because libertarianism is wrong (or necessarily anything like Randian). It just needs to cease and desist operations and redirect all resources towards more productive ways of advancing libertarianism, including supporting Trump for President very strongly to save America.

  4. Why have legislators enacted and courts upheld ballot censorship? Lawyers and judges have been taught taught all their lives that ballots must be censored to have “orderly” elections. Orderly means elections when Democrats and Republicans win 99.8% of the time. The state monopoly of ballot form publishing does not require quotas for exemption from censorship of voter access to candidates.
Abolish all ballot access laws and replace the state censored ballot with a write-in only voter verifiable ballot. Give voters back their bite.

  5. Commendations to Andy Jacob for his ballot access efforts and best wishes to the Libertarian Party achieving ballot status in North Dakota!

  6. Richard Winger,

The fact that tiny third parties in low population states constantly reinvent the flat tire is hardly news.
Asking state legislators for things is of some potential value, but limited and diminishing.

    Why do I say that?

North Dakota is a highly Republican dominated state. Why should Republican legislators who have all the control they want of a state help you just to be fair and nice?

Increasingly, they’re more likely to worry about spoiler effect potential, regardless whether it’s actually imaginary or misconstrued or not, because the fight to defend us against demonic rats is ever more of a blood sport.

Which is why the trend in ballot access law has turned negative, as you yourself noted.

  7. * overall trend.

As for the minor party itself, we’re talking about a tiny handful of people with various different motivation, driving issues, skills, abilities, connection to reality, etc.

Maybe some of them tried and failed to get legislators to sponsor something. Maybe some of them are delusional about their likelihood of having to do a ballot drive again and again. Maybe some don’t know or care to find out how to lobby.

Maybe they just don’t care about ballot access since in reality they’ve never provided the bulk of the money or volunteer effort – it’s always been the national party each time.
