Alabama Legislative Committees in Both Houses Pass Bill for a Later Presidential Certification and Petition Deadline

On April 17, Alabama legislative committees in both houses passed bills to move the certification deadline for presidential nominees from August 15 to August 23. The bill also moves the independent presidential petition deadline from August 15 to August 23. The bills, if passed, will take effect immediately and will relate not only to 2024, but future presidential elections.

SB 324 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee; HB 448, which is identical, passed the House Constitution, Campaigns and Elections Committee.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gets spot on Michigan’s ballot as Natural Law Party nominee

Lansing — Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom some experts view as a potential spoiler in this year’s race for the White House, will be the Natural Law Party’s nominee for president in Michigan.

Kennedy’s campaign announced the news Thursday, a day after members of the Natural Law Party in Michigan held a convention where they officially picked him.

The arrangement gives Kennedy, the nephew of slain President John F. Kennedy, an official spot on the ballot in Michigan, and it provides the relatively obscure Natural Law Party with a high-profile name to be their standard-bearer.

  2. There have been lots of national conventions that ended after Aug. 23 — by my count, since World War II, there have been 5 Democratic and 4 Republican conventions that did not conclude until after that date. Alabama may have to amend their certification deadline again in future years.
