New Jersey State Trial Court Rules 1,909 Atlantic County Ballots Should be Counted Even Though Officials Opened the Envelopes Too Early

New Jersey held primaries on June 4.  In Atlantic County, election officials were not supposed to have opened envelopes containing absentee ballots until May 31, but they did open them earlier.  On Friday, June 7, a state court ruled that the ballots should still be counted.  See this story.

  15. Unbelievable – then again, very easily believable. Isn’t there federal legislation requiring absentee ballots not to be opened before counting of in-person ballots begins? Or was that proposed but never passed or not signed into law? Or was it law but has it been abolished again already since?

  33. I always thought absentee ballots could be opened early and counted before election day, but the results couldn’t be announced until election night after voting booths were closed. Opening them early could make a person think of fraud somewhere, but they would have to prove it. What’s someone gonna do! Open the absentee ballots early and restuff or change the votes? Hey, is it 2020 again? lol

  34. Open the ballots, check how they were filled out, spoil or remove the ones that voted “wrong”, possibly fill out the fields that were intentionally left blank. All that can be done after election day as well, but there would be less time and more scrutiny from observers.
