  56. I opened the article but have not read it yet. It seems to me that if so many people are willing to vote for Trump, with all his flaws and dangers, there is a much bigger problem. The near-majority preference for Trump is astonishing. It no longer matters whether he wins or not. A libertarian-leaning author on cspan is right now talking about her book, the Certainty Trap, questioning why people can’t reach agreement. But it’s hard to accept that we are wrong on Trump.

    So, this is an existential crisis, perhaps for the world. Beating Trump does not solve that problem. I could suggest libertarian solutions, but what good does that do, if people really don’t want to cut off the goodies? They don’t want money going abroad, but it’s difficult for them to accept that our alliances probably kept us fairly safe since the war, and isolationism is probably a bad choice. They won’t listen to experts, but what else is there? They have a visceral reaction to the large government, but won’t accept consequences from trying to make it smaller, and no politician of note is seriously talking about the huge debt and deficits, which means both major parties are leading us to a financial crisis very soon. No one wants us to be “policeman of the world”, but there is no alternative to the U.S.; everybody says nothing can get solved without America taking the lead. I trust no one wants Trump doing that.

    Also, I fully admit that I have no idea what would make things come out the best in the long run. And some have have suggested that both Teddy Roosevelt and Truman acted impulsively like Trump, though many would argue they were more thoughtful in their decision-making.

    I don’t have answers, but maybe someone might want to address this?
