Two Independents Elected to Virginia Legislature This Week

On November 3, the two Virginia state legislators who were running for re-election were re-elected. They are Lacey Putney in the 19th district, and Watkins M. Abbitt in the 59th district.

Putney was re-elected with 64.1% of the vote. His only opponents were a Democrat, Lewis Medlin, who got 20.6%, and a Constitution Party candidate, Will Smith, who got 15.1%.

Watkins Abbitt was unopposed.

Another independent candidate, Gordon Helsel, lost to his Republican opponent, but placed ahead of his Democratic opponent. The vote in the 91st district was: Republican Tom Gear 48.3%, independent Gordon Helsel 32.6%, Democrat Sam Eure 19.0%.

    Abbitt, and Will Smith were among the 27 Independent Green endorsee/nominees on ballot for House of Delegates in Virginia.

    Interesting year.

  2. Of the 27 Indy Green Endorsed/nominated candidates…..20 of them garnered over 1,000 votes each. In comparable races between this year and 2007; races in which the same candidate ran for the same seat we see the following.

    District 28 a gain of 4,419 votes over 2007
    District 68 a gain of 6,608 votes over 2007

    In 2007 both of these races were contested by more than one challenger; this year our candidates were the only challengers.

  3. Virginia’s Independent Greens (IG) of Virginia had 27 endorsee/nominees for House of Delegates (out of 100 seats). The most ever.

    Results by District

    9th – Sherman “for Rail” Witcher received 20.7% of vote in two way race.

    12th – Paul Cornett got 34% of the vote, also two way race.

    18th – Todd Jack 17% in three way race.

    19th – William Smith 15%, three way race.

    28th – Craig “for Rail” Ennis 24.5%, two way race.

    29th – Aaron Tweedie 20%, two way race

    30th – Matt Carson 25%, two way race

    37th – Anna Marie “for Rail” Choi 7%, three candidates on ballot.

    39th – Col. Jim “for Rail ” Leslie 1%, four way race.

    41st – Monique “for Rail” Berry 2%, three way race.

    44th – Gail “for Rail” Parker 2%, three way race.

    47th – Josh Reubner (Green Party) 4%, three way race.

    57th – Robert Smith 21%, two way race.

    59th – Watkins Abbitt – re-elected.

    64th – Col. Albert “for Rail” Burchkard 2%, three way race.

    65th – Gary Reinhardt 29%, two way race.

    68th – William “for Rail” Grogan 30%, two way race.

    69th – Shirley Harvey 6%, three way.

    70th – Otis Brown 22%, two way.

    82nd – John Parmele 4% in three way.
