Congressman Eric Swalwell Enters Race for Governor of California

On November 20, California Congressman Eric Swalwell, a Democrat, entered the race for Governor. That makes eight prominent Democrats who have declared. There are only two Republicans with strong campaigns for Governor, which opens up the possibility that the June 2026 primary will result in only two Republicans, and no Democrats, on the November ballot.

  1. Well, a general election ballot with no Democrat for governor would be one way to get the CA Democrats to get rid of Top Two in a hurry.

  2. Absolutely! Get rid of Top Two followed by getting rid of the primaries altogether and returning to having parties nominate their candidates by convention where they can be properly vetted.

  3. When it gets close to primary day a bunch of lower-polling Democrats will drop out and endorse the frontrunner.

  4. There are no “running mates” in California. Governor is elected entirely separately from Lieutenant Governor, just as in Texas.
