Jon Slavet, Republican, Says He Won’t Run for California Governor

On March 3, Joe Slavet, a Republican businessman from Silicon Valley who had been running for Governor of California, announced that he won’t run. He had been considered one of the prominent Republicans running, but the other two Republicans, Chad Bianco and Steve Hilton, were far ahead of him.

    Twenty-seven years after being convicted of a murder he said he didn’t commit, a Detroit man walked out of a Michigan prison on Tuesday as a free man, following a Wayne County judge’s decision to vacate his conviction and dismiss the charges against him.

    George Calicut Jr., 56, was convicted of the murder of Virgie Perkins in October of 1999 and sentenced to life in prison based on what prosecutors, the Michigan Innocence Clinic and Circuit Judge Bradley Cobb deemed to be a false confession elicited by Detroit Police Detective Barbara Simon. DNA evidence also excluded Calicut as the murderer.
