Here is the list of candidates running in the Washington state August 4 top-two primary. There are no statewide offices up in Washington this year, so the list starts with the most important office, U.S. House.
The most interesting race is in the 9th district, where five candidates are on the ballot: two Democrats (including the incumbent, Adam Smith), one Republican, one Socialist Workers Party candidate, and Kshama Sawant, whose ballot label is “independent”. Sawant campaigns as a socialist, and she could have chosen that label, but she didn’t. She is a former member of the Seattle city council, and she has a vigorous campaign. The Cascade Party has candidates for two congressional districts and one legislative seat. There is also a “Cascade Democrat”. The Cascade Party was founded by Krist Novoselic in 2024.
Most major party candidates appear to have selected “Democratic” or “Republican”. In previous elections, some Republicans have chosen variants, including G.O.P., etc.
I wonder why Adam Smith doesn’t campaign as the candidate of the Invisible Hand or Capitalist parties. Has his views evolved over the past couple of centuries?
