Arizona Libertarian Party Status is in Peril Due to Declining Voter Registration

The Arizona Secretary of State has posted new registration data. It shows that Libertarian registration is down to 30,150 members, which is only .69% of the state total. If it declines below two-thirds of 1%, the party will lose its qualified status. The total number of registered voters in the state is now 4,374,827, and two-thirds of 1% of that number is 29,166, so the party only has 984 more members than it needs.

  1. Wouldn’t losing their party status actually increase their ability to run candidates once they petition back on due to the primary qualification laws?

  2. The problem is that to get back on the ballot would take a petition drive of 34,127 signatures, and because the turnout in November 2026 is likely to be higher than it was in 2022, the number will be even higher than 34,127. That would probably cost $200,000 and the national Libertarian Party is financially weak.

  3. They seem to have plenty of money when it comes to suing each other at national and state levels, but pretty much always be broke otherwise.

I guess that tells you what’s really important to them.

Why waste money to make it much easier to run a lot more candidates for a few years, when all or almost all those candidates will run paper or largely inactive campaigns that will have little impact on voters or elections and bring in little to no new supporters, activists, donors, members, etc?

Suing each other and appealing the results is so much more exciting, fun, and satisfying!

They used to be, functionally, largely a ballot access scam, bilking donors to get on the ballot at great expense and then run candidates not in any way prepared to compete at the levels they ran at, if any at all, plus

stupid whine and moan buffet get togethers covering areas they couldn’t possibly effectively organize (not that they would have any idea what that takes or desire to actually do that sort of grunt work), meetings to argue over parliamentary minutia ad nauseam, highly ineffective to actively self-defeating public outreach, and pointless arguments about total nonsense, mostly online.

Now they are increasingly not even most of those things – just a giant nonstop battle royale of impotent cannibalism.

The part of the answer to Q that Richard Winger didn’t say is YES.

OF COURSE, they could also easier money and pay people to register people to their party like they used to. This article is probably the start of priming that pump.
