On July 7, the Ninth Circuit heard Arizona Democratic Party v Hobbs, 20-16759. The issue is the state law requiring voters who forgot to sign their mail ballot to correct that error by the end of election day. A U.S. District Court had invalidated it and given such voters five days to correct the error. See this story.
Election Administration Reports, the nation’s oldest periodical devoted to election administration, will cease publication this year. It has been published biweekly ever since 1971. The first editor was Richard Smolka, and the only other editor it has ever had has been John T. Willis.
The suspension of the publication is announced in the June 7, 2021 issue. The purpose of the publication was to help election administrators. It was an expensive publication; it cost $219 per year.
On July 7, U.S. District Court Judge J. P. Boulee declined to enjoin any of the new Georgia laws that affect voting procedures, relative to the upcoming July 13 legislative runoff elections. Here is the 11-page order in Coalition for Good Governance v Kemp, n.d., 1:21cv-2070. The order says the new voting rules were in use for the initial elections in those same districts earlier this year, and it would not be good to have a different set of rules for the runoff.
