Oregon Ballot Access Case for County Initiatives

On June 30, proponents of some Oregon county initiatives filed a federal lawsuit for ballot access relief. McCarter v Brown, 6:20cv-1048. The proponents are trying to get county initiatives on the ballot of many counties, to test public opinion on moving many eastern Oregon counties into Idaho. McCarter v Brown, 6:20cv-1048.

Socialist Equality Party Presidential Candidate Files Ballot Access Reply Brief in California Case

On July 15, Joseph Kishore, Socialist Equality Party presidential candidate, filed this brief in Kishore v Newsom, c.d., 2:20cv-5859. This is one of the two challenges to the California independent presidential petition procedure, which requires 196,964 signatures to be collected from late April through early August, a period entirely within the health crisis.

This case will be heard on July 20 at 2 p.m. by U.S. District Court Judge Dolly Gee.

Oregon Secretary of State Asks Ninth Circuit to Stay U.S. District Court Order that Gave Ballot Access Relief to Initiatives

On July 15, the Oregon Secretary of State, Bev Clarno, asked the Ninth Circuit to issue a stay in People Not Politicians v Clarno, 20-35630. The U.S. District Court had ordered substantial ballot access relief for statewide Oregon initiatives. The Ninth Circuit asked the Secretary to file her brief by July 17, and any reply is due July 20.
