Sixteen Candidates Likely to be on Maryland Major Party Presidential Primary Ballots

It is likely that the Maryland Democratic presidential primary ballot will have four candidates, and the Republican ballot will have twelve. The Democrats will be: Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders, and Rocky De La Fuente. The first three were put on last month because they are discussed in the news media, and De La Fuente got on by submitting 3,200 signatures of registered Democrats.

The Republicans will be: Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee, John Kasich, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum, Donald Trump, and Robert H. Heller, Jr., of Maryland. The first eleven were put on automatically last month because they are discussed in the media. Heller submitted petitions. Heller has not qualified for any presidential primary in any other state this year, so far at least.

It is not certain that the De La Fuente and Heller petitions will be valid, because they haven’t been checked yet. The signatures were due February 3.

Kentucky Libertarian and Constitution Parties File Brief in Lawsuit over Definition of “Political Party”

On February 3, the Kentucky Libertarian and Constitution Parties filed this brief in Libertarian Party of Kentucky v Grimes, e.d., 3:15cv-86. This is the case filed on December 4, 2015, that challenges the Kentucky definition of “political party.” In Kentucky, a group can become a qualified party only by polling 2% for President. There is no other means for a group to become qualified. Kentucky and Washington are the only two states for which this is true.
