This interesting story about the Communist Party appears in the BBC News Magazine. Although the story is fairly lengthy, it does not mention that the party long ago gave up running candidates for public office. Thanks to Thomas Jones for the link.
New Mexico Representative Sandra Jeff will be a write-in candidate for re-election in November 2014. See this story. She failed to get on the Democratic primary ballot, because she didn’t have enough valid signatures. She can’t be a write-in in the Democratic primary because New Mexico does not permit write-in votes in primaries. She can’t be an independent candidate in November because New Mexico does not allow independent candidates who have recently been registered members of qualified parties.
In 1997, the New Mexico legislature passed a bill abolishing write-in space on general election ballots, but then-Governor Gary Johnson vetoed it, so New Mexico still allows write-ins in the general election.

On April 30, SurveyUSA released a poll for the Ohio gubernatorial election. The results: John Kasich, Republican incumbent, 46%; Democrat Ed Fitzgerald 36%; Anita Rios, Green, 4%; undecided 14%. Scroll down to question four.
The decision of the poll to include that configuration is strange. Anita Rios won’t be on the November ballot unless she gets at least 500 write-in votes in the Green Party primary. And we don’t know if the Libertarian, Charlie Earl, will be on the November ballot until the 6th circuit rules on his ballot access case. That should come out at any time; the hearing was eight days ago.
U.S. District Court Judge Neil Wake will hold an oral argument in Arizona Green Party v Bennett on Wednesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. This is the case that challenges the February deadline for a newly-qualifying party to submit its signatures. Thanks to Claudia Ellquist for this news.
