On October 9, Jill Stein filed a federal lawsuit in Ohio in order to see that votes for her are counted. She is on the ballot, but earlier this month, the Secretary of State said he would not allow her votes to be counted because of a mix-up over vice-presidential substitution. Here is the Complaint, which explains what happened. Stein v LaRose, s.d., 2:24cv-04042. The case is assigned to U.S. District Court Judge Sarah D. Morrison, a Trump appointee and the chief judge of the southern district.
This year, there are two Alaska State House elections with neither a Republican nor a Democrat running. In the Second district, independent incumbent Rebecca Himschoot of Sitka has no opponent. In the 37th district, independent incumbent Bryce Edgmon is running for re-election and his only opponent is another independent, Darren Deacon.
A U.S. District Court will hear arguments in Georgia State Conference of the NAACP v Kemp on Wednesday, October 9, at 3:45 p.m. This is the case over whether the deadline for voter registration should be extended from October 7 to October 14, due to hurricane Helene in Georgia.
The Republican National Committee and the Georgia Republican Party have asked to intervene in the case on the side of the state. The NAACP opposes that.
On October 8, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee informed the U.S. Supreme Court that it does not intend to file a response in Ayyadurai v New Jersey Democratic State Committee, 24-342. This is the case in which independent presidential candidate Siva Ayyadurai was challenged off the New Jersey ballot by the Democratic Party. He had enough valid signatures but he was challenged for having been born in India.
In the past New Jersey had printed the names of five presidential or vice-presidential candidates on the November ballot, even though they did not meet the constitutional qualifications.
The Green Papers has this chart showing not only which presidential candidates are on the ballot in which states, but which candidates have declared write-in status in each state.
The editors of the Green Papers constantly update this chart. The chart will continue to change, as states process filings for write-in status. Sometimes the deadline has passed to file for write-in status, but the state still hasn’t processed the filings. For instance Jill Stein has filed for write-in status in New York but the state still hasn’t approved it.
As to ballot status itself, the unknowns are: (1) Cornel West in Pennsylvania; (2) Jill Stein in Ohio.
