The two factions of the Prohibition Party have agreed to split the Pennock bequest equally, after having met in state court in Media, Pennsylvania. If the two factions had not agreed, they were threatened with having the bank that handles the money give that annual bequest to some other anti-alcohol organization.
On August 17, Diebold announced that its vote-counting equipment business, Diebold Election Systems, had changed its name to Premier Election Solutions. Premier may be spun off as an independent company. Thanks to Walker Chandler for this news.
The St. Petersburg, Florida Times has written a major story about Brian Moore’s announcement that he is seeking the Socialist Party’s presidential nomination. Moore was an independent anti-war candidate for U.S. Senate in Florida in 2006.
The results in California’s special election to fill a vacancy in the 37th U.S. House district on August 21 are: Democrat Laura Richardson 67.1%; Republican John Kanaley 25.2%; Green Daniel Brezenoff 5.4%; Libertarian Herb Peters 2.3%.
In November 2006, there had only been two candidates for this seat: Democrat Juanita Millender-McDonald 82.4%; Libertarian Herb Peters 17.6%.
California has four ballot-qualified minor parties: American Independent (Constitution); Green; Libertarian; Peace & Freedom. All four of them traditionally hold their own presidential primaries. Each party state chair is empowered to tell the Secretary of State which names to list in that party’s presidential primary. This year, the state chairs must submit the list no later than October 8, 2007, earlier than it has ever been.
