The Washington state top-two primary held on August 2 resulted in a virtual tie between the second and third place candidates, in the Land Commissioner race. Only 51 votes separate the two candidates. The recount will start August 26 and is expected to be finished on September 3 or 4.
On August 23, Nancy Dahlstrom withdrew from the U.S. House race in Alaska, following the August 20 top-four primary. She had placed third. She is a Republican and the current Lieutenant Governor. Under a precedent set in 2022, this should mean that fifth-place finisher John Wayne Howe, the Alaskan Independence Party candidate, will appear on the November ballot.
U.S. House is the only statewide office on the ballot in Alaska this year, other than president.
The Anchorage Daily News has this editorial, saying given that the state has ranked choice voting, it would be smart to just drop the August primary and only have the general election, just as Louisiana does. On August 22, the Ohio Secretary of State determined that the petition to recognize the Libertarian Party has enough valid signatures. As a new party, it does not have its own primary, but essentially nominates by convention or other party meeting, although each nominee needs a tiny petition.
Wisconsin Democrats are challenging the ballot position of Cornel West, on the basis that some campaign documents were not notarized properly. No one disputes that he has enough valid signatures. The administrative challenge will be heard on Wednesday, August 27, at 11 a.m.
