Actually Been Walsh is the current mayor of Syracuse. He was elected last year running on the Independence and Reform Party lines against a Democrat, a Republican, a Green, and a Working Families Party candidate. He had originally petitioned to be a candidate on the Upstate Jobs Party line. But that party was folded into the Reform line in accordance with a state law that prohibits running on an independent party line if a candidate is running on two or more established lines. Miner was term limited.
When did that law pass? Both Governor Cuomo and Rob Astorino ran on two established lines four years ago (Cuomo as a Democrat, Independence, and Working Families Party candidate, Astorino as a Republican-Conservative), and both petitioned their way onto the ballot on a third line: Cuomo on the Women’s Equality Party and Astorino on the Tax Cut Now Party. Both got the necessary 50,000 votes to become ballot qualified. (Tax Cut Now became the NY Reform Party.)
Wouldn’t it be fun if Mayor Miner’s party received 50,000 votes or more?
Tim: it’s been the law for decades, but it does not apply to governor, because that is the office that can establish a new party if it gets 50,000 votes. It also does not apply to candidates for the legislature. It applies to all other offices.
Also, Serve America Movement is more than 15 letters, so it might be abbreviated on the ballot.
The party that was renamed Reform Party in New York after the 2014 election was actually called Stop Common Core. There was no ballot line called Tax Cut Now. Although in 2010 Carl Paladino ran on something called the Taxpayers Party. It didn’t get 50,000 votes, and ceased to exist after the election.
My error. Tax Cut Now was Pataki’s third line that accidentally qualified and was on the ballot for four years as the Freedom Party.
I grew up in New York. My family was involved in New York politics for years. My parents were involved in helping to form the Conservative Party.
They don’t just “fold” and independent party into another party. It’s just that there are only so many lines, so they have to list both designations in one space. It’s why one candidate for an office can be in space 1A and the next office can be in 4A. It means they have more parties contesting the office than lines. But it’s not as if they disallow the designation.
