Strayhorn Attended ManyTexas Transportation Dept. Hearings

Carole Strayhorn, one of the independent Texas gubernatorial candidates, appeared at many of the scheduled hearings on the “Texas Corridor” plan, to voice her opposition to the “Corridor”. These hearings always draw overflow crowds of opponents, so the tactic seems useful for her. The “Corridor” is being promoted by Governor Rick Perry. It is a combination 10-lane freeway plus rail corridor, running north-south through Texas, intended to make it easier and cheaper for goods to pass to and from Mexico and Canada.

  1. Those meetings have wrapped up. Staryhorn did not attend all of them (including the one I spoke at.) That would have been physically impossible anyway as some were held coincidently at different locations. It is possible that there was a Strayhorn representative at each of the meetings, but that is less clear.

One thing that was clear: the meetings were well attended for this sort of thing. From 200 to 1,000 was the typical attendance. Well over 90% of the public attendees were against the Corridor. (In some locations it was more like 99%!)

There are members of all parties on all sides of this issue. Many Democrats are against it, but in my two way race for State Senate in District 14 my Democratic opponent refuses to take a position on the Corridor or the local toll road plan. Therefore I have picked up support from most of the anti-toll road organizations.
