The Unity08 Rules Committee has released a tentative draft of rules on how presidential candidates will be eligible for the Unity08 on-line presidential selection process. The draft will not be final until or unless it is approved by the Delegates.
The proposal requires someone who wants the Unity08 presidential nomination to submit paper petitions signed by 500 registered voters, from each of 5 states. In addition, the candidate must also receive the on-line endorsement of 2,500 registered voters in each of 10 states. This dual requirement translates into a grand total of 2,500 written signatures, plus 25,000 electronic messages of support. See here for details.
Okay, so I see you’ve set up a hurdle for candidates that seems reasonably democratic. What does the candidate get for clearing this hurdle?

I understand your frustration. It does often appear that those in power are too corrupt to salvage. Unfortuanately, reacting one person at a time they can simply pick you off as being an unbalanced, extreme radical. They count on those that they oppress to be too uneducated to be able to speak out or articulate clearly.
My hope is that people will wake up and bring us back to the original concept of “FREEDOM” that this country was founded on.
That is not too likely when there is a camera on every street corner and “Big Brother” is watching your every move. And people accept this so complacently! Still one can hope that people will wake up before it is too late.
I think “King” Bush thinks it is already too late for us or he would not be so daring in ignoring the wishes of the majority of the people.
I for one will still choose “liberty or death!”

MOST of you already know that I am DISGUSTED with both nationalpolitical parties. From the MOMENT the Democratic NationalCommittee poured money into Iowa in support Sen.Kerry (the warvet) and Sen.Edwards (meant to remind us of the Kennedy years) Ifelt my anger rising. The DNC, in their wisdom, gave momentum tothe candidates that couldn’t lose relegating the other primarycandidates to the back pages of the media which resulted in aninability to raise funds for their campaigns.The DNC conciously reduced the people’s voice in selecting a candidate through thePrimary process.
The GOP engaged in similar tactics by supporting their chosencandidate, George W. Bush. Having elimated all challengersexcept Sen. What does anything that Ms. Goldsmith stated have to do with Unity08? Anyone with a brain could deduce not a thing. Anyone who cares enough to actually look at what Unity08 is will see that Ms. Goldsmith represents Unity08 no more than she represents Republicans or Democrats, which is to say not at all. The rest of the population amounts roughly to the same people who scream that either Democrats or Republicans are fascists. No matter what you say to them, they are going to believe what they will believe because they have been brainwashed by the partisan spin machine.

I’m a bit confused about the 500 vote requirement. The rule states “The proposal requires someone who wants the Unity08 presidential nomination to submit paper petitions signed by 500 registered voters, from each of 5 states.†Does this mean any five states or is there a list of five states that the candidate must get the signatures from? Are there any guidelines for people trying to get these signatures; where, when, how, etc.? I would think that many of the Unity Recruiters would be new at this because the “experts†are already working for one of the “established†parties.
On another topic, I have been reading the posts here and find that many are difficult to read because spacing between words is missing, spelling is incorrect, sentences run on forever (no punctuation), etc. I suggest that everyone that has a word processing program (ex. Microsoft Word) on their computer use it to create their post and then copy (cut and paste) it to the website. By using the spelling and grammar checker built in to your word processor your posts will become much more to those trying to read them.
I agree with Mr. Belanger. Congress could care less about the average citizen. It is all “me,me,me” and all the perks and money that end up in their pockets. As most are all in the top 3 – 5 percent as far as wealth, I think it is long past time that they pay for their own haircuts, meals, limos, insurance, and pay into the Social Security system. Government is THE biggest employer in this country and should follow the same rules as everyone else. They often exempt themslves from laws that they pass.
All brances have FAR exceeded their duties according to the Constitution. It does not give them the right to tell us what to wear (seat belts, helmets), what to eat (no fois gras), and definitely not what we can do in our homes and in a private business.
Term limits must be set, automatic raises each year should not be permitted. Why is their cost of living more than the one I get on my SS?
Unfortunately, the out of control government is at ALL levels.

I have been at this long before Unity08 came to be, and I have called for the new revolution of forming the UNITED PARTY. I have pushed to have the 3rd parties (reform, independent, veterans, etc) to come together for a strong 3rd party that will put the other two corrupt parties out of business. We wanted a party that realizes it is in public service and works for the majority of the American people. One that is of, by, and for the PEOPLE, not of, by, and for the GOVERNMENT. We want a party that will impeach, fire, and replace anyone at any level of government that doesn’t do what the majority of the American people want. I absolutely agree with Mr. James Dick’s comments, both about the 500 votes and the 5 (and 10) states requirements – these are confusing concepts to me, also – AND about posts that are difficult to read.
It makes each of us look bad if some of the posts are misspelled, have run-on sentences and are just plain poorly edited. It only takes a few seconds to spell-check or edit – and it leaves a lasting impression on anyone who reads our comments as to what kinds of persons comprise Unity08. EVERYONE will, of course, make typos or mistakes now or then, but we can at least try to minimize them.

Unity ’08 is a programmatic fraud. It is sponsored for the exclusive purpose of capturing the energies and time of voters who are fed up with the two dominant major parties, and then steering those people down a side track and away from meaningful activities that might harm the Republicrat monolith. It was begun as a pre-emptive strike against the presumed swell of support which would otherwise go to alternative party organizations in the near term.
It is near impossible to dissuade people from being conned if they’ve got their minds made up to avail themselves to dead-end nonsense like Unity ’08. I can only ask them nicely to look a little deeper before committing time and energy to it. There are a number of things that don’t add up in terms of their origins and immediate aims – not to mention the fact that they get favorable press and airtime for what looks like the mere asking. Please take time to investigate. Ask some hard questions about where they think they’re going with it.
Those of you who find it so easy to attach yourselves to Unity ’08 should do yourselves a big favor by avoiding it in favor of an actual party organization. If you don’t like Reform, go with the Greens or Libertarians or Veterans or American Party — maybe the Constitution Party if all you care about is being anti-abortion; but for God’s sake don’t waste your time with Unity ’08, because that is precisely what it is designed to do: waste your time.

I hate the Republicans because they are anti middle class and anti science; I fear the Democrats because they are unwilling to stand up to the terrorist crisis and they condemn anyone who does. Unity 08 gives me a place to go and hopefully will give me people for whom I can vote. The power of the internet is very great and very democratic (small d). Now we will see if this initiative can gather the necessary momentum to affect the 08 election in a positive way and possibly even give us a chance to elect true patriots and honest people as our leaders.

I think alot of our problems, if not most of them is that most Americans feel that their vote means nothing. That the “Powers that Be” are going to do whatever they decide to irregardless of what the American People want or need. Whenever you have Lobbyists in the equation (And we all know what they do!) it takes the entire concept “Of the People, By the People, and For the People” and throws it right out the window! Thus, the American People have little or NO say about anything concerning OUR Countrys Future, OUR Safety, or OUR Welfare.
Some of the issues the American People face at present are quite ominous to say the least. With the U.S. Dollar sinking like a rock, the bottom falling out of Real Estate, bankruptcys and foreclosures increasing, the National Debt in the Stratosphere (And still Climbing), the War in Iraq and Afghanistan, our sick and ailing Immigration Policys, and other problems ad infinitum…is bad enough. Then we hear last month about the absolutely brilliant idea of doing away with our Borders (Sovereignty) and connecting a “Highway” from Mexico all the way to Canada and then coming up with a name like “The United States of North America”, Supposedly so that we can compete in the Global Marketplace against the European Union, China, Russia, and anybody else who trys to horde all the OIL! That idea might seem as a “Quick and Painless” solution to our problems for some. I think not! Our problem didn’t happen overnight nor will they be solved that way. I once held my right hand up and swore an Oath before GOD to uphold the Constitution of our Great Nation. When one does that you’r obligated to do just that if called on. I did so by going to Vietnam. I had my own opinions on that war but when you swear an Oath you cannot “pick and choose” the things you want to do and the things you do not. Honor and Integrity demand it! Our Founding Fathers knew the meaning of those words! Our Leaders are confronted with a most arduous task. Deciding whether to continue bickering, back stabbing, finger pointing, and in general wasting their time and the taxpayers money which by doing so accomplishes absolutely NOTHING! OR by doing what they are being paid for, upholding the Constitution and making decisions that are in the best interests of the People. It will take Courage, compromise, and a genuine intent on doing the right thing on BOTH sides! Doing so will show the American People that Honor & Integrity is STILL alive in Washington and not “Missing in Action”. I pray that our Leaders find the Courage and the resolve to make the hard decisions ahead and that they do it quickly. Time IS of the essence!

A first year medical student would have no difficulty in certifying them.Why would any one want to advocate Fascism.Didn’t I and around 10,000,000 other guys spend some of their lives eradicating such a monstosity in World War 2. Investigating Unity08 seems like a reasonable thing to do, especially given the untenable political situation we all face (regardless of our opinions or party affiliations).
I saw Waterston in a movie called _Mindwalk_ and it helped open my eyes to the relentless infighting and pigeonholing that ~is~ our daily diet.
Free thinking and ~speaking~ Americans have the responsibility to focus on the strategic mission at hand. Instead, sheeplike, we have allowed ourselves to accept fewer rights, less privacy, and whispered dialogue as the new lifestyle. Marinated in fear, reassured by those who offer nothing ~because their credibility is gone~
Perhaps their hope is for us to vote for the devil we know rather than one we don’t. Unity08 sounds like an idealistic, yet practical approach to find a ticket without devils at all.

I recently joined Unity ’08. It will take me some time to read all the posts but let me say I do feel safe here. As safe as I can feel considering Bush et al read my email, snail mail…listen to my phone calls, can pick me up as a POI and then no one will know where I am…
For so long I have wanted a group of Americans to “I’M MAD AS HELL AND I WON’T TAKE IT ANYMORE”. Then go about the business of reclaiming our country. As a woman who grew up in the sixties and seventies and is use to stuffing envelopes and marching for women’s rights, civil rights and against the Vietnam War I have long asked where are the people? Why aren’t the streets full of Americans marching to regain their civil rights? Or perhaps marching against the two party system? The list goes on and on.
All I know is I have left the Democratic Party and become an Independent…which many in my very politically active family believe is a sin on my part…in the hope my one voice would turn into two and two would turn into three.. .
We have a great opportunity with Unity ’08. My hope is we do not blow it with inside bickering. A positive exchange of ideas is what I am looking for..any thing less makes this community no better than what we have..IMHO.
Once I have navigated this website I will be back and post my ideas for moving forward.
All I ask is should I disappear the friends I meet here will demand to know where I am and what the present elected officials have done with me.

Since the link ends up at Ballot Access News, I will take a quick moment to personally thank Mr. Winger for all the great, hard work he puts into keeping tabs on the real political situation in america and how the political process really works. I gave up on the Dems and Republicans a long time ago. One thing most folks arent aware of is the bipartisan efforts that have gone on over the past 100 years especially to make it near impossible for anyone other than republicans and democrats to ever run for office. Combine that with such glorious and unconstitutional bills like McCain/Feingold and you quickly see that the only thing bipartisan means is that both parties are going to be taking away your rights and freedoms. Frankly I really don’t see how even this effort can succeed given the way the laws of this country are now written. It would be nearly impossible to ever get a bipartisan ticket onto 50 state ballots without millions of dollars and lots of signatures, and then deadlines would likely even stand in the way. I just don’t think that Sam and his merry gang have thought this through.
Fortunately there is at least one candidate running already that is nothing like any other candidate. His name is Congressman Ron Paul (www.ronpaul2008.com). He is a republican but they all hate him. He has been voted the taxpayers best friend every year he has been in congress. He does not vote for anything that isn’t authorized by the constitution. He has never voted for a tax or tax increase. He voted against both wars, against the Patriot act and every other freedom-stripping law that has been passed in the past 6 years, and plenty of other great things. He is exactly what america needs. He wants to restore american government to what is actually called out in the constitution and nothing more. Talk about fiscally responsible!

I totally disagree with what Charles Foster had to say. He is from the Reform Party and probably just doesn’t like unity08 because it will steer away people from being interested in the Reform Party. I assure you though, there is NO reason to join the Reform Party. What was once the party of Perot is now just a dead party with minimal candidates and minimal support. The party basically died with Pat Buchanon’s 2000 run and Jesse Ventura leaving the party. Now unity08 is America’s best option for 2008. My biggest concern though is they won’t have enough support. They need to gain money and fast so they can afford to run a professional campaign…Where’s Ross Perot when you need him?
