Writer for Orange County Register Switches Parties

Steven Greenhut is a senior editorial writer and columnist for the Orange County (California) Register. On May 2, he announced in his column that after 25 years, he is leaving the Republican Party. In his May 6 column, he said that he will retain his Republican registration long enough to vote for Ron Paul in the February 2008 presidential primary, and then he expects to re-register into the Libertarian Party.

  1. Mr. Greenhut is a smart man. I hope we can get the word out about Ron Paul by February. Mainstream Media is doing their best to snuff him out, but a lot of people are doing their best to distribute his message of freedom, honesty, and proper foreign policy. Good Luck and welcome to the Libertarian Party.

  2. That’s great to have someone on board from the print media. However, I’m even more excited about the freedom of the Internet –YouTube in particular– in getting the word out about more candidates. This may be the first presidential election where the established corporate media has lost its total control over the candidate selection process.

People are still going to be looking at opensecrets.org to keep score on which candidate has the most money. Accordingly, we should keep the money flowing to Ron Paul.

  3. I liked something someone wrote in support of Dr. Paul after the debates on the MSNBC message boards after the R debate Friday night: Vote for your Country First; then your Party. Even Donna Brazil, on ABC News’ This Week with George S., who has been a big Clinton Reporter, said Ron Paul, “Was her man!” I expect there to be all kinds of cross polination.

  4. Better get over to Hannity.com and foxnews.com and make sure they don’t like about the polls as well.

    🙂

  5. I hope Dr. Paul wins. I also hope he doesn’t get bumped off. The international bankers and socialist have been known to do that before.Such as Lincoln and Kennedy! They don’t like people messing with their money!

  6. I’ve seen a lot of praise elsewhere from responses in blogs to the MSNBC after-debate poll (which he had the highest positive rating) on Paul in the debate. The only problem is you don’t know if these are typical people of if these are Paul supporters poll skewing, cause poll skewing has happened elsewhere with him.

On the bright side, it shows that he has a committed base.

  7. Greenhut has written some great stuff on private property and the dangers of eminent domain abuse.

This is a very principled move on his part. Another Californian, Milton Friedman, the great libertarian economist, remained a registered Republican. Friedman said this was “more practical.”

There were a lot of pro-Ron Paul callers to C-SPAN this morning. Unless this was an organized campaign, Dr. Paul seems to have a great deal of support.

  8. I have seen nothing to imply an organized effort — and even if there were such an effort, of course the other, lesser, candidates would have them, too.
I am on several lists so if there were such an effort, I’d have been urged to participate.
I have not seen any such urging, and in fact have not been one of the participants.
Maybe there is a God after all.
    Up Ron Paul!
