Green National Committee Mulls Over Green Party Mascot

In a whimsical moment, the Green Party National Committee has been thinking about a possible official animal that would symbolize the Green Party of the U.S., since the Democratic Party has the donkey and the Republican Party has the elephant. According to Green News and Opinion (here), the choices, in order of support, are (1) Turtle; (2) Frog; (3) not to have an animal symbol; (4) Bee; (5) Sunflower.

Minor parties have not generally been attached to animal symbols, although the Prohibition Party consistently used a camel; the 1912 Progressive Party used a bull moose; and both the Reform and Constitution Parties used an eagle.

Green National Committee Mulls Over Green Party Mascot — 16 Comments

  1. You know, I just thought about it and the camel is pretty damn clever for the Prohibition Party.

As a delegate the Green National Committee, I voted for the turtle. Not only because it’s green, I can see the symbolism in the perserverance and refusal to quit from the “Tortoise and the Hare” fable and the fact that we certainly need a tough shell during election season.

It’s also an animal that’s easy to stylize for logos.

  2. Don’t forget the tiny Single Tax Party of the early 1920s. They adopted a feline as their party’s symbol. “I see the cat,” it turns out, was an old expression used by those who, professing to have “seen the light,” became converts to the single tax philosophy. It was a popular phrase among single taxers dating back to Henry George’s time.

  3. I suggest a dolphin. It’s a mammal, like the elephant and donkey; but it’s a water animal, so it’s just a little bit different. Dolphins are also known to be highly intelligent and social animals.

  4. The Phoenix is a mythological bird that is continually reborn of the ashes of its predessor .As such our Green Party might have been down as a lessor party but is being reincarnated with great strength from the ashes of its predessor or its prior self. This would be a great mascot for our party. Go green.

  5. Personally, Of the choices given, I prefer either the sunflower ( first choice) or the frog.

  6. I think the polar bear should be green partys mascot/animal to represent global warming.

  7. Why not a noble deer? Deer are regal, majestic animals and it would present us as not ones associated with the political circus like the elephant and the donkey, but instead wild, noble, majestic, and roaming free in the green forests that we strive to protect. That and deer are mythical symbols and associated with the wild. Take a look at the Golden Hind of Artemis for reference. I can imagine a green deer with golden horns and a circlet of roses around its neck for our mascot. It seems majestic just like us.
