California will hold a run-off special election to fill the vacant State Senate seat, 26th district, on May 19. The district is in Los Angeles County. The three candidates on the ballot will be Democrat Curren Price, Republican Nachum Schifren, and Peace & Freedom Party member Varela Henderson.
Good luck to Mrs. Henderson. And BTW, her actual name is Cindy Henderson, Varela is her middle name. This is her website: http://www.votecindy4senate.com/
It is spelled Varela-Henderson at the bottom of that website.
California conducts its special election primaries as a blanket primary, where voters may vote for any candidate regardless of the candidate’s or voter’s party affiliation.
Candidates qualify for the special election on the basis of their party affiliation. If one candidate receives 50% of the total vote for all candidates of all parties in the special primary, they are elected and the special election is not held.
Schifren and Henderson were unopposed for their respective party nominations. There were 6 Democrats running, and Price received 35% of the total vote.
Turnout for the primary was 7.9% of registered voters.
Her website says election Mar. 24?
Ironically enough, had this been a top-two race, the finalists would have been two Demcorats, since the Republican came in third, and the P&F back in the pack.
#5 Quite reasonable given that the Democrats collectively had 86% of the vote.
Paul, the primaries was on march 24. And since nobody got over 50% of the vote, she will be in the general election.
Not saying it’s reasonable or not, just that the options would have been different.
It does clearly exhibit the problems with top-two, though.
#8 It is not a problem at all, it is a strength of Top 2.
