Socialist Workers Party Supports Privacy for Signers of Washington Referendum

The September 7 issue of The Militant (weekly newspaper of the Socialist Workers Party) has this editorial, supporting privacy for people who signed Referendum 71 in Washington state this year. Referendum 71 was put on the ballot by groups who want to repeal the protections for same-sex couples that the legislature passed earlier this year. A federal court is considering whether the names and addresses of the people who signed the petition should be made public.

  1. My grandfather was a socialist who endured much suffering through the Great Depression. I know he would have an appreciation for the sufferings of Socialists and the dangers they are in when they challenge the capitalist system and run for office, and promote their causes etc. However, I know he would not have agreed on anonymity for people trying to take away civil rights from people because of the fact that he was a strong proponent of civil rights. Although you may think following the law as to Referendum 71 sets precedent, my thinking is you would be able to distinguish your case from that of political donors to this type of cause. Your dangers have been very real and proven and could result in lynchings and hangings. Dangers to the “heterosexual community” have never been established.
