Five Parties Will Have Nominees in Mississippi U.S. House Races

In Mississippi, all qualified parties nominate by primary. However, a primary is not actually held for parties with no primary contests. Because the ballot-qualified minor parties in Mississippi never have contests in their primaries, they in effect have already nominated for 2010. Primary date in Mississippi in 2010 is June 1.

The Reform Party has U.S. House nominees in all four Mississippi districts. The Libertarian Party has nominees in two districts, and the Constitution Party has one nominee. See this story.

U.S. House is the only partisan office up in Mississippi this year. There is no U.S. Senate race up, and state elections are held in the odd years before presidential election years, i.e, 2011. Thanks to Steve Rankin for the link.

  1. The 1st district is now represented by the Democrat Travis Childers.

“Four independents also filed to run this year in the 1st District: A.G. Baddley of Hernando, Les Green of Hernando, Rick “Rico” Hoskins of Batesville and Wally Pang of Batesville. Pang ran in 2008.”

One of these independents has Tea Party backing.

Shawn O’Hara is running as a Democrat in District 3, now represented by Gregg Harper. In the past, Shawn has also run for various offices as a Republican, an independent, and under the Reform Party label. His sister is the Reform Party candidate this year in District 3. Neither Shawn nor his sister lives in the district.

Shawn is reportedly still touting his plan for snow cone stands at rest stops.

  2. #2: No. The only incumbent who is vulnerable is District 1’s Childers, a freshman Democrat from north Mississippi. The only candidate who may beat him will be the Republican nominee.

All of the other candidates in District 3, however, are shaking in their boots over the candidacy of Shawn O’Hara.
