Hawaii Special Election, U.S. House

On May 22, Hawaii held a special election to fill the vacant U.S. House seat, 1st district. Hawaii special elections do not allow parties to nominate candidates. Instead, anyone runs on a single ballot by collecting 25 valid signatures. Five Democrats, five Republicans, and four independents, ran. The leading Republican, Charles Djou, was elected with 39.4% of the vote. There is no provision for a run-off. See the returns here.

The voters cast 59% of their votes for one or another Democrat, but the Democratic vote was splintered. Democrats might have worked harder to narrow the field of Democrats, but they presume that they will regain this seat in November 2010 anyway, and the balance in the House right now is not terribly close. If this had been a Senate race, the Democratic Party would have acted differently.

This is the first time a Republican has been elected to Congress from Hawaii in many decades.

Hawaii Special Election, U.S. House — 17 Comments

  1. They’ve only elected one senator, three members of congress, and two governors as Republicans since statehood in 1959. In Hawaii, they are Bluer than Blue.

  2. Please, no one reply to the “Obama resign” person, s/he won’t convince you, and you won’t convince him/her. S/he is trolling for attention.

  3. Actually, is not many decades but two. The GOP had one representative from Hawaii (I think from this Congressional District) from 1986-1990 when Pat Saiki represented that district. Maybe she could have remained in the House for a little longer but she ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1990 (as part of a group of 3 GOP women who ran–and lost in Hawaii, Illinois I think Rhode Island).

  4. Richard brings out an interesting point for 3rd partisans whether he realizes it or not. Of the four “independents” does Richard know if any were affiliated with a 3rd party? Just as he points out that the Democrats might have won if they had narrowed down the Democratic candidates, perhaps an “independent” candidate might have done better if those independent candidates had been narrowed down.

While we most likely will never see Green, Peace and Freedom or other “liberal” candidates running in the same 3rd party primary to pick a nominee and unite behind, neither will we likely ever see Libertarian, Constitution or other “conservative” candidates running in the same 3rd party primary to pick a nominee to unite behind. 3rd partisans need to realize that it is political suicide to run a candidate against another candidate who bascially shares the same philosophy. The same could be said of Independent candidates.

But this is not likely to change. 3rd party and independent candidates often have egos bigger than their campaign finances. And lack of financing of 3rd party and independent candidates is another issue that can be discussed at another day.

  5. HI is a “citizenchip washing state” BO is an undocumented alien until HI accepts as signified on its COLB form the notice of birth statement filed in 1961 — most likely filed by grandma Dunham in an attempt to provide basis for US citizenship. Orly Taitz election is June 8th and Lakin CM starts June 9th, and CA-SOS GOP primary Dunn eligibility hearing may finally occur this coming week. All this should prove very interesting for the Logan Act violating MSM corporations/ reporters/ employees.

  6. Pamela Barnett filed order to show cause in Barnett v Damon Dunn, Sec of State Debra Bowen, Atty Gen Jerry Brown(currently dem candidate for gov of CA) and others

  7. The Green and Libertarian Parties are ballot-qualified in Hawaii, so anyone in that election would have been free to choose either of those party labels. The parties themselves could not have done anything about it. But none of the independent candidates chose either minor party label.

  8. Candidate/incumbent rank order lists of replacements.

    NO more special elections.

    P.R. and nonpartisan A.V.

  9. Obama’s ‘CERTIFICATION of Live Birth’ form reveals Birth Registration FILED but never fully ACCEPTED!

  10. BORN IN THE USA?

  11. These comments on Obama not being born in the USA sound like total nonsense. They take a piece of a document and interpret it to fit their weird theories.
Come on, if you think that Obama was born somewhere else other than the USA, present evidence of his birth outside the country. Even the GOP governor of Hawaii has stated that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii in 1961.

  12. This is a temporary pickup, the real race was between the two Democrats to see who would be getting this seat in November. The seat will be Democratic again in November, that’s not in question. It’s only a question whether it will go to blue dog Case or real Democrat Hanabusa.

  13. citizenship washing state HI and Obama are joined at the hip in regards to their fate politically, but on a larger scale the three enablers — congress, courts, and MSM as well as most politicians in their role as national leadership of the DEM and GOP risk being banned from the ballot for five years in all states following Obama being forced out of office based on his lack of eligibility to be POTUS/CINC.

  14. Fox News and MSNBC and Raido Free Europe all have real electronic proof that “miracle” socialist “president” Obama is not a true human person – actually a hologram created by the KGB and Chilean berry farmers – yet all conspire to keep the truth from truth-seekers like me.

And I’m not wearing any pants.

  15. For newer folks —

natural born = at birth allegiance to a nation-state regime — WHERE ever one is physically born (in such nation-state, on the high seas or even in a foreign nation-state).

    NOT exactly legal high tech.

I.E. – allegiance status follows nation-state status of father only [???] — Stone Age / Dark Age stuff — allegiance in the old time monarch regimes — having *subjects* (aka serfs, etc.).
