New York City Councilmember Says He Will Run for Governor on Ticket of a New Party

New York city councilmember Charles Barron says he will run for Governor as the nominee of a new political party this year. See this story. Barron, who is black, says he is unhappy that his party, the Democratic Party, is about to nominate a full slate of five statewide nominees who are not people of color.

Barron hasn’t come up with a name for the new party. The new party’s statewide slate will need 15,000 signatures, not 50,000. Barron represents the 42nd district, in Brooklyn.

  1. Fairly interesting development. Last year, Councilman Barron basically endorsed Frances Villar, the PSL candidate for NYC mayor. I wonder if PSL will give any support to this campaign if it gets off the ground?

  2. When I vote I usually make an effort not to judge candidates based on happenstantial factors such as ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.

But I’ve got to admitt, New York’s field of candidates for governor are a pretty homogenious bunch.

  3. Party for Socialism and Liberation. Many of its leaders were formerly in the Workers World Party, but that party split, and nowadays the Workers World Party no longer runs candidates for office.

In California, activists in the Party for Socialism and Liberation are generally members of the Peace & Freedom Party. The PFP candidate for Governor this year, Carlos Alvarez, is a PSL person.
