Syrian Government Says Some Opposition Parties Will be Permitted to Exist

This story says that the government of Syria is ending its almost 50-year ban on political parties (other than the governing party). However, it will still be illegal for anyone to create a party based on religion, region or ethnicity.

    Syria’s system has traditionally been a bit like China, the Baa’th Party allows other ‘parties’ to exist as long as its little more than a splinter group under its name.
