“The Empire”, politics blog of WNYC (the leading National Public Radio station in New York city) has this lengthy story about Jesus Gonzalez, the Working Families Party nominee in the September 13 special election, Assembly, 54th district.
Gonzalez is one of three 2011 minor party nominees in special legislative elections who might actually win. The other two are Libertarian Brendan Kelly, in the special election in New Hampshire, and Mark Miller, Green Party nominee in Massachusetts. The New Hampshire special election is today, September 6; the Massachusetts election is October 18.
Of course he’s got a chance to win – Gonzalez is funded by the endless money supply of George Soros, who owns the WFP. This is a very interesting election because all three candidates are registered Democrats, the Democrat also has the GOP and Conservative backing, and the NY times + the Empire actually has fair coverage of the election (unlike NYT’s unfairly cutting out Chris Hoeppner in the NY-9 special election).
I’m rooting for Brenden Kelly to win in New Hampshire!
New York probably has some form of Electoral Fusion, which allows serious third parties to make a positive difference in campaigns. Frankly, it seems like a good idea and the USSC case upholding a ban on the practice is just painful to read.
I do not know too much about George Soros, but I believe he is a wealthy man who has been tied to various center-left, progressive causes.
I think he backed some civil libertarian issues as well, like that medical marijuana in California when the issue was on the ballot.
