Republican Nominee for Governor of Virginia says Libertarian Should Not be Invited into Any Debates

Even though Ken Cuccinelli, Republican nominee for Governor of Virginia this year, wants to debate 15 times with his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe, Cuccinelli does not want Rob Sarvis to be invited to any of the debates. See this story. Sarvis is the Libertarian nominee and appears likely to be the only third candidate on the ballot.

  1. It reminds me of a line from a movie:

Lawyer: But your honor, I object!
    Judge: On what grounds?
Lawyer: It’s devastating to my case!

  2. At some point these people are going to have to figure out they can’t keep cheating their way into office. They want to purge their libertarian wing but they don’t want them to run for office own their own. They can’t have it both ways.

  3. Not REALISTIC?!?! With that response it is safe to assume he thinks democracy and free speech aren’t realistic either because such beliefs are, as #2 on this comment thread hinted at, detrimental to his campaign if they were to be practiced and Sarvis is allowed to debate.
Cuccinelli’s prophecy has become self-fulfilling because without such media and people exposure, Sarvis is almost certain to get 1-2% of the vote unless Virginian voters are more intelligent than average. Someone needs to protest this…

  4. In some states Republicans, can’t compete with the Democrats’, so would we see just a one person debating.

  5. So whats to stop the Democrat from only debating the Libertarian. Let the Republican debate himself. Can anyone get a hold of the Democrat and see if hes on board with this.

  6. This would actually be in the Democrats interest. If he can make the Libertarian well known and split a lot of votes away from the Republican then the Democrat could sneak in.

  7. @ 8 above… that presupposes that the Libertarian nominee would take more votes away from the Republican that the Democrat. That is not always or even often the case. It is only a misconception perpetuated by the media.

  8. @6 Yeah, does the name “Sanford” ring a bell?

I agree with @10. Cuccinelli is a coward. GET SARVIS IN THE DEBATES!!!

  9. “Cuccinelli does not want Rob Sarvis to be invited to any of the debates.”

Since Cuccinelli is too much of an intellectual coward to debate Robert Sarvis, nobody should vote for him. I’d go so far as to say that Cuccinelli deserves to be removed from the ballot for this.

  10. Presupposes my ass. How about this. If the Libertarian is in the debate and the Republican is not who do you think this will hurt…the Republican of course. Therefore it benefits the Democrat.

  11. Of course if the Libertarian is not in the debate who knows, it may help the Republican or it may help the Democrat. But that’s a different story.
