U.S. Supreme Court Hears McCutcheon v Federal Election Commission

On October 8, the U.S. Supreme Court heard McCutcheon v Federal Election Commission, a campaign finance case. Here is one article about the hearing. The gist of this article, and a few others, seems to be that the Court is likely to strike down the limit that restricts an individual from donating to more than fifteen congressional candidates, if he or she is giving the maximum $2,600 to each candidate.

UPDATE: here is the transcript of the hearing. Thanks to Rick Hasen for the link.

  1. How, exactly? People pumping out millions of dollars are only interested in betting on the winner…not the nag that comes in third.

  2. Where is any dollar limit mention in the 1st Amdt ???

See the $20 in the 7th Amdt — when $20 was BIG cash in 1789.

What is the purchasing power of a 1789 dollar in 2013 ???

    1 cent, 2 cents, barely more ???

  3. Wouldn’t it be many times higher? I used a couple of online calculators and got ranges from $22 to $490, depending on if you were measuring purchasing power or other factors (I don’t pretent to understand it all). Regardless, shouldn’t the number be positive, i.e. over $1.00 ?
