Three-Way Alaska Gubernatorial Debate — 4 Comments

  1. What happened to Mr. Myers, the Constitutionalist candidate?I’m sure he was invited to appear, since the Libertarian nominee, Ms. Clift was invited.

From what I could gleam from the article, Ms Clift held her own in the debate, although I disagree with her that “The only purpose of government is to protect individual liberty, life and property.”

  2. Darryll:

You ask for my opinion of what else should government be doing.

Article 1, Section 8, Paragraph 1 of the Constitution of the United States reads in part:

“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;”

“…provide for the…general welfare…” means what it says and says what it means, and in my opinion this means Congress shall have the power do whatever is necessary for the general Welfare of the United States.” I know some believe such is only referring to welfare of the states. But what, or rather who, makes up the states? People.

Providing a Social Security System and a Medicare Program is providing for the general welfare of the people.

You have a right to disagree with my opinion and I respect such.

  3. You quoted what the Constitution authorizes the US government to do, not what you think a government SHOULD do.
The term “…provide for the…general welfare…” is very broad. It could be argued that the government of the Soviet Union attempted to provide for the general welfare of the Soviet people, and we know how that worked out.
