The Arkansas Libertarian Party has just begun its 2016 petition for party status. The requirement is 10,000 valid signatures, which must be gathered in a 3-month window that the party chooses.
The Arkansas Green Party has not yet decided whether to attempt that petition, or just do the presidential petition, which only needs 1,000 valid signatures.
This is a state where the Prohibition Party ought to give some effort for their Presidential ticket. Pragmatics among the leadership know that as of right now Louisiana and possibly Colorado can be obtained with a $500 filing fee each. Tennessee is a possibility with only 750 signatures – scattering evenly over the congressional districts.
The party came very close in 2012 of losing its legacy of being the oldest 3rd party to have participated in at least one state in every presidential election since 1872.
There is also a suggestion of gradually changing the party name over time to one which takes the focus off the Alcohol issue and the party’s one issue image. Many leaders are adamantly opposed to such, while others know the name is the “wart on the beauty queen contestants nose” which will always keep her from ever being considered.
