Jill Stein Formally Declares Her Candidacy for the Green Party Presidential Nomination — 14 Comments

  1. Great.

She apparently hopes to be the Norman Thomas or Harold Stassen of the Green party.

(Unfortunately, I guess you might need to be of “a certain age” to get those references).

  2. Really Jim? She’s like Thomas and Stassen just by virtue of running twice? Seems a bit harsh.

“(Unfortunately, I guess you might need to be of “a certain age” to get those references).”

You have to be of a certain age to know how to read, true. For me that age was three. Granted, that was well after Stassen and Thomas stopped running, but I would hope you’d get some references to various things that happened before your time, too, no matter how much of a dinosaur you may be (sorry if you don’t get that reference, given that you’re unlikely to have actually been alive in the time of the dinosaurs).

  3. Presidents who ran for president, and did not win the first time, but did win in their second election, include Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, and Ronald Reagan. Even Herbert Hoover’s name was on presidential primary ballots in several states in 1920, although he didn’t declare in 1920.

  4. After Sen. Sanders endorses Sec. Clinton, Dr. Stein will of course look like good cause as she helps build a party for and not against voters.

  5. How many $$$ BILLIONS will rightwing Elephants give to the Green Party for ballot access — to DIVIDE and CONQUER the Donkeys in the about 10 marginal Electoral College States ???

  6. Demo Rep, how many $ BILLIONS will leftwing Donkey give the Green Party for ballot access because they don’t like rightwing Donkeys?

You have no clue what you’re talking about.

  7. I wonder how many $$$ BILLIONS the Right gave to us Greens in 2012, Demo Rep? To be honest, I don’t know. But I do know that Jill’s campaign in its entirety managed to raise about .009 BILLIONS, or in other words, about 900,000 dollars, according to the website OpenSecrets. You can disagree with Jill and the Green Party’s ideas all you want, but don’t impugn our moral/ethical character without cause. That’s one of the major things that set us apart from the Democrats and Republicans. We’re not perfect, but at least we try to be more honest and decent than the corrupt Establishment.

Oh, and by the way, you might find this little article from 2012 interesting:

  8. In fact, Ronald Reagan suceeded on his third try (he ran for the GOP nomination in 1968 and 1976).

  9. Good point, Bob.
There is also George H. W. Bush, another president who did not win on his first attempt.

In defense of DemoRep, a Republican did pay to get the Green Party on the ballot in Texas in 2010, and it has remained on ever since.

  10. When and where will the GP convention be and what will happen if Bernie Sanders decides to continue to November, 2016? Either as Green or Independent?

  11. This year also marks the second presidential campaign for Hillary Clinton, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry, and Rick Santorum. You have to run a lot more times than that to get into Harold Stassen territory.

  12. Stassen ran 11 times for president. From 1940 until 1992, except for 56, 60, and 72.

  13. George Wallace ran 4 times, 3 as a democrat and once as a third party candidate.
