Jill Stein Says She has Almost Qualified for Primary Season Matching Funds

On July 24, the five individuals seeking the Green Party presidential nomination presented their ideas to the national meeting of the Green Party being held in St. Louis. Jill Stein mentioned that she is close to qualifying for primary season matching funds. That involves raising $5,000 in small donations from each of 20 states. Stein said she believes this is the earliest a minor party or independent presidential candidate has ever achieved that goal.

In mid-August 1991, Lenora Fulani, who was seeking the nomination of the New Alliance Party, met the matching funds requirement. She went on to receive more than $2,100,000 for her 1992 campaign.

  1. How many Billions will any GP Prez candidate get from the rightwing Elephants ???– to DIVIDE AND CONQUER.

    P.R. and nonpartisan App.V.

  2. I’ve said this before Demo Rep, and I’ll say it again: in 2012, Jill Stein raised .001 billion dollars, or 1 million dollars, and little, if any of that was from any Republicans. Jill will probably raise more money this time around, but that will be due to the fact that she’s started earlier and is more organized compared to 2012.
And are you a spoiler theorist Democrat in disguise or something Demo Rep, because that’s the kind of accusation I’ve seen such Democrats make about us Greens in their efforts to shut down any opposition to the Establishment (I’ve seen some Republicans make similar accusations against the Libertarians vis a vis the Democrats). While I most certainly agree with you on proportional representation, playing the “spoiler theory” card won’t help towards getting people to want to adopt PR. It’ll just annoy those of us, like Greens such as myself, whose party platform includes electoral reform such as proportional representation.

  3. This is surprising news. I saw an e-mail sent out not too long ago stating that she had only raised $300 from Maine.

“We have some exciting news: our presidential campaign, only weeks out of the gate, is poised to qualify for Federal matching Funds in record time for a 3rd party campaign. In fact, we only need 16 more states to qualify. When they do, that means all donations up to $250 – from all states- will be doubled for the next year!…
Maine is only about $4,700 away from qualifying.
Will you donate to make sure that Jill Stein qualifies for Federal Matching funds in record time? “

  4. @Tom: Maine is one of the less populous states. I wouldn’t normally expect a candidate to make it one of their first 20 states in which they raised $5,000, unless the candidate was from Maine.*

The 20 states Stein qualified for matching funds from in 2012 were Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

*Upon further research, I found that Howard Dean used Maine as one of his qualifying states in his 2004 campaign, but none of the other candidates I have looked up had Maine among their 20 qualifying states.
