NBC Gives Free Time to Five Republican Presidential Candidates — 5 Comments

  1. Bizarre that all of the candidates have not requested free time. I’m sure most of the campaigns have youtube videos they have made that could be turned into campaign ads on the cheap, so the ultimate cost of using the time would be marginal.

  2. That won’t work, because she isn’t seeking the Republican nomination. The race for the nomination is not considered the same event as the general election.

  3. Didn’t Hillary Clinton also get time on Saturday Night Live? That’s the whole reason the Republican candidates started asking for Equal Time if I recall correctly, and if I’m correct (just checked Google, she was on SNL a little over a month ago), then that means Jill ought to have a chance of being on there. At any rate, if enough people sign her petition (granted, it would have to be quite a few people, but then again, quite a few people are starting to distance themselves from the D’s and R’s these days), NBC might decide that there might be viewership reasons to include her.

  4. @Joshua H.: Yes, Hillary did appear in a segment on “SNL” a few weeks back, for about 3 minutes. The NBC stations reported that appearance in their respective political files which they compile for the FCC, and Lawrence Lessig attempted to claim equal time for that, but he hadn’t yet completed his negotiations to achieve any equal time before he dropped out of the race.

Neither Sanders, O’Malley, nor any of the other Democrats attempted to claim equal time based on Hillary’s appearance.

Nor did any of the Republican candidates make equal time requests due to Hillary’s “SNL” segment, and if they had done so, they would presumably have been denied because they were not in direct competition with Hillary with regard to the Democratic nomination.
